Kamala Harris’ bold presidential plan

The former vice president teased she could launch another campaign in 2028, just days out from marking one year since her loss to Donald Trump. Asked in a BBC interview if being leader of the free world was still one of her goals, Ms Harris said her grand-nieces would, “in their lifetime, for sure”, see a female president. “I am not done,” she said, after suggesting she could “possibly” make another bid. “I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.” Get all the latest news from US President Donald Trump and what it means for Australia — download the news.com.au app direct to your phone. A recent poll showed Harris was not the favourite to run on the Democratic ticket in the 2028 US election. Former transportation secretary Pete Buttigeg had 16 per cent of Democratic Party voters while the former VP was behind on 13 per cent. Next in line was California Governor Gavin Newsom who will step down in 2027 after serving the constitutionally mandated maximum of two terms. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro had five per cent of the votes each, but 23 per cent overall were unsure. Another survey in August showed Hollywood actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson had more chance of being the Democratic contender in three years’ time. Asked about the bleak outlook, Ms Harris dismissed the polls. “I think there are all kinds of polls that will tell you a variety of things, I’ve never listened to polls,” she said in response. “If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office – and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here.” She added she has not decided what to do next “beyond what I am doing right now”. Step aside for the next generation of Democratic leaders,” one X user said. “Trump has greater odds of getting a 3rd term than Kamala does of ever becoming President,” another joked. “That’s JD Vance being elected then,” someone else predicted. “Please. Pick someone else. We will lose again. Nothing against her but take the hint that the American people did not like you as a candidate,” one Democrat supporter said. Other commenters backed the ex VP, saying she deserved a second chance. MORE: Surprise list of celebs who quit US over Trump win According to the 22nd Amendment, President Trump cannot run again as he already served one full term and is currently in his second. However, MAGA podcaster and former West Wing aide Steve Bannon said this week there are “many alternatives” for the commander-in-chief to run again. He did not reveal specifics but flagged the “plan” will be revealed “at the appropriate time”. President Trump earlier this year also indicated there were methods but argued there is “a long way to go” in his current term. Ms Harris has been making the media rounds promoting her memoir 107 Days, the amount of time she had to convince Americans to vote her after Mr Biden withdrew.
