Kalamazoo hot dog restaurant moving to larger location after break-in

KALAMAZOO, MI — A walk-up hot dog spot in Kalamazoo is relocating.
Copper’s Dog House is moving down the street to 348 S. Kalamazoo Mall. The restaurant has been closed since August, after its walk-up window was smashed.
The new space will be open by mid-October.
Copper’s Dog House previously operated seasonally out of the walk-up window at 312 S. Kalamazoo Mall, serving hot dogs and soft serve ice cream. The restaurant opened in October 2024.

The new space is larger and will allow the restaurant to expand their menu and add indoor seating. The restaurant will also offer catering and space for larger events in the new location.
The new location is the former home of Artisan Sandwich Company, which closed in April.
“With this new space, it will allow us to serve Kalamazoo even better,” a press release from Copper’s Dog House said. “While we are sad to leave our little window, we know that this opportunity to grow is one that we cannot pass up.”
Copper’s Dog House Owner Joey Gamrat found the restaurant’s window shattered on Aug. 6, at the peak of busy season. Cash was stolen and some machines were damaged in the break-in.
The repair company said repairs would take up to 12 weeks. With that timeline, it wouldn’t make sense to reopen in the previous space, the release said.
“For a small business in the peak of our busiest season, hearing this news was scary and heartbreaking,” the release said.
Renovations are underway at the new location.
