Minister of Higher Education Jessie Kabwila has formally sued Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) National Organising Secretary, Sameer Suleman, over what she describes defamatory remarks about her physical appearance.
Kabwila says Suleman insulted her during a DPP rally held in Bangwe, Blantyre, where he allegedly branded her in a derogatory manner, saying: “Kuchipaka Vaseline two days chili mbuu kutuwa.”
According to summons filed before the Civil Registry of the High Court in Lilongwe, Kabwila is seeking K500 million in damages after Suleman failed to respond to her compensation demand made in June this year.
Her lawyer, George Kadzipatike, said the remarks have caused irreparable harm to her reputation.“My client has been subjected to public humiliation, scorn and ridicule, both locally and internationally. We are therefore demanding damages for defamation, and an order compelling the defendant to issue a public apology,” Kadzipatike said.
The case, filed as Civil Cause No. 180 of 2025, is before Justice Howard Pemba.
Suleman, widely regarded as a controversial political figure, has yet to respond to the lawsuit
