Journalists and security agencies must work as partners for national progress

Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration between the media and security services, highlighting that their relationship must be built on mutual trust, respect, and a shared commitment to national progress. Speaking at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA)/KGL Media Awards on Saturday, November 8, he advised that interactions between journalists and security agencies should never be defined by suspicion or rivalry but by partnership and purpose. He described both institutions as “guardians of the national vision” whose collective efforts are crucial to safeguarding Ghana’s democracy. He reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding press freedom and creating an environment where journalists can operate without intimidation or fear. “We shall continue to build a society where journalists can work without fear or favour, where truth can flourish without suppression, and where constructive criticism is met with dialogue, not hostility,” he stated. The government spokesperson also reaffirmed Ghana’s resolve to remain a beacon of press freedom on the African continent, noting that open dialogue between the media and state institutions is essential for national development. He called on journalists and security officers alike to view each other as partners in peace, accountability, and nation-building. “Let us therefore leave here today with renewed determination to build bridges across the media and the state, to strengthen the bond between journalists and the security services, and to advance together as partners for peace and progress,” he noted.
