The Buffalo Bills may not be the best team in the AFC or the favorites to reach the Super Bowl, but as they always seem to do, they’re keeping themselves in the race to win the conference. After losing two games in a row, they bounced back this past Sunday by trouncing the Carolina Panthers, 40-9, to improve to 5-3. The New England Patriots, who are 6-2, are in first place in the AFC East, but plenty of people figure the Bills will end up finishing first in the division. Quarterback Josh Allen, who was last season’s MVP, is having another MVP-caliber year, and while he didn’t play up to his standards in Week 8, he did set two new records. He had a passing and rushing touchdown in the same game for the 46th time, surpassing Cam Newton’s old record, and he also became the first player in Bills history to score 70 rushing touchdowns. He has made Buffalo a top-four scoring offense despite the fact that no one on the team has as many as 400 receiving yards this year. At 6-foot-5 and nearly 240 pounds, he’s almost built like a fullback, but once he gets going downhill, he builds speed and is very difficult to tackle. Indeed, the Bills lead everyone in rushing yards and are second in rushing touchdowns and yards per rushing attempt. Running back James Cook has 753 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns through seven games, and he leads the NFL with 107.6 rushing yards per contest. Buffalo has lost to the Chiefs in four of the last five postseasons, and last season, it suffered a heartbreaking 32-29 loss to Mahomes and crew in the AFC Championship Game. As a franchise, the Bills haven’t been to the Super Bowl since the 1993 season. That year, they made it to the big game for the fourth straight time, only to lose for the fourth straight time. They’re still looking for their first league championship since the AFL-NFL merger. For more on the Bills and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
