The club was helpless to stop rising star Jonah Pezet from leaving the club with Code Sports reporting the young halfback has agreed to a blockbuster two-club deal with Parramatta and the Broncos. Pezet is signed with the Storm until the end of 2029 but has a clause in his contract that allowed him to explore his options given Melbourne halfback Jahrome Hughes recommitted to the club earlier this year. As reported by Code Sports, the 22-year-old playmaker will head to Parramatta in 2026 on a one-year deal before taking his talents north and joining the Broncos from 2027. Pezet, who impressed filling in for Hughes in the qualifying final, will partner Mitchell Moses in the halves at the Eels and play under coach Jason Ryles. But in a major boost for the Broncos, Pezet is set to be Brisbane’s next long-term halfback, taking over from Adam Reynolds, who is expected to retire at the end of next season. Copied URL to clipboard Pezet’s signing is a coup for Brisbane and coach Michael Maguire, who will have Pezet partner with Ezra Mam in the halves, adding the talented playmaker to a team already brimming with talent including fullback Reece Walsh. While the Broncos now appear to have a clear pathway towards long term success it appears the Storm are headed towards turbulence. NSW coach Daley said it is possible the Storm are headed towards a roster “turnover”. The club is fighting several retention battles with reports earlier this month linking Cameron Munster, who is contracted at the Storm until the end of 2027, with the Perth Bears, who will enter the competition in 2027. According to leading NRL reporter Brent Read, Storm officials expect fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen to jump ship to the rebel R360 competition. Adding to the uncertainty around the club, prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona has been granted a release from the final two years of his contract. The most damaging blow to the Storm would be the potential departure of coach Craig Bellamy. Bellamy’s name has been in the headlines this month after sensationally being linked to the Gold Coast Titans. The Queensland club has reportedly approached Bellamy to become the Titans head coach from 2027, despite Josh Hannay’s recent hiring. Losing all five — despite being unlikely — would decimate the club. Pezet’s departure means Munster is now critical in the future direction of the club. Leading Code Sports journalist Michael Carayannis said on SEN radio the Storm won’t consider granting Munster an early release. Jonah Pezet has played his last game for the Storm. “There’s no way the Storm will let Cameron Munster go to Perth now,” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Drive. “The way it could have played out is if Munster left and Pezet stayed then, but they’re not gonna cut Cameron Munster 12 months early.” Munster himself moved to shut down the chatter, telling Code Sports on Wednesday in the UK: “I will honour my contract and the club doesn’t want to let me go”. It is a significant backflip from the club after reports following their Grand Final defeat suggested the club would consider allowing Munster to explore a move to Perth. Read said on Fox League’s NRL 360: “I spoke to (Storm chairman) Matt Tripp in the lead up to the grand final about Cameron Munster. “He said, ‘Look, we’d love him to stay, but if Cam wants him to explore Perth, we’ll allow him to do that’.” Daley on Tuesday said on Sky Sports Radio the potential departures of star players would give the Storm salary cap space to chase players on the open market. We know Nelson is leaving the club so they may have a bit of a turnover,” he said. “A bit of a change coming down there and they may have a bit of money in their salary cap to maybe look at someone else.” Parker said on SEN Queensland: “There’s a ripple effect now, right. Because there were strong suggestions, Cam Munster was going to maybe head over to the Perth Bears to join up with Mal Meninga. “So Melbourne could potentially lose a Jonah Pezet, a Craig Bellamy and a Cam Munster and a Papenhuyzen and a Nelson (Asofa-Solomona).” The Broncos legend went on to agree with one talk-back-caller on his SEN Breakfast Show that the Storm would also find it more difficult to attract players if Bellamy were to leave. “If Craig goes to the Titans, like it’s been rumoured, Jonah Pezet leaves, Cameron Munster leaves potentially go to the Perth Bears. Papenhuyzen looks like he might be on the outer and going to R360 if it ever eventuates. Nelson is on his way out. “So there’s five really key individuals out of that side who have played in back-to-back finals.” Cameron Munster. Photo by Cameron Spencer/Getty Images. Parker said he does not see the Broncos’ raid for Pezet as a gamble. “I’ve seen enough of Jonah Pezet and by all reports his football IQ is second to none,” Parker said. “He’s the ultimate professional. And like I said, if you’re purely going from what I’ve seen on the football park, he’s been in the Melbourne system for a number of years now and now he wants to go and have an opportunity to play regular first grade and he’s going to do that at the Eels and then head to the Broncos.” Daley also said the Broncos were smart to give Pezet one year to study under Eels playmaker Mitchell Moses.
