San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning to discuss the team's health situation heading into Week 9. Lynch offered updates on wide receiver Ricky Pearsall and the team's quarterback situation as the 49ers prepare to face the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. Ricky Pearsall's knee recovery Pearsall has been dealing with a lingering knee injury and continues to miss practice this week. Lynch provided some clarity surrounding his situation. "Ricky was never put to IR, so no window to be opened or whatnot, but he's still working off to the side," Lynch said. "And what I can tell you is those PCL injuries, that seems to be the injury of the Niners this year, and they can be very stubborn. I had one during my career, and they can linger a little. It's an injury Puka Nacua had, I think, a year ago, and it lasted some weeks. "Ricky's doing his best to get back. He is making steady progress. He plays a position—there's other positions where maybe you can play, not being at full speed. Receiver's a position you better be at full speed and have the ability to get in and out of breaks. "And so, Ricky's doing a great job with the rehab. I can tell you that there's been some positive progress, but he's not quite there yet. Now, can he get there by Sunday? We'll see. But such a good football player. We're surely missing him." Brock Purdy's progress and QB decision Quarterback Brock Purdy has been practicing, albeit as a limited participant, as he continues to recover from the lingering toe injury he initially suffered in Week 1. Purdy returned to the field in Week 4 but suffered a setback and has not played since. "Last time, we felt like he was feeling pretty good, looked pretty good in practice," head coach Kyle Shanahan explained on Wednesday. "And then, in the game, one hit, and set him back five or six weeks—whatever this has been—four weeks. So it's kind of a sensitive situation, and hopefully, getting some reps in practice and stuff will give him that confidence that it's better than it was last time." In Purdy's absence, Mac Jones has started six games for San Francisco. With the 49ers facing the Giants on Sunday, the question remains: who will start at quarterback? "We'll see," Lynch said. "Mac's done such a great job and continues to do so. Brock, as I mentioned, continues to progress. Kyle spoke of it yesterday. A lot of this, at this point, is going to be on trusting Brock and where he's at—and he continues to feel better. He continues to ramp up what he's doing out on the field, and that was the case yesterday, and we'll see by the end of this week, we'll all make a good decision on who that guy's going to be."
