John Legend revealed the secret to making his and wife Chrissy Teigen‘s relationship successful after 12 years of marriage.
“Just support each other and love each other. Have each other’s back,” Legend, 46, told Us Weekly in an interview published on Tuesday, September 23, when asked how how they keep their relationship strong. “We’ve been through it all together — so much joy, but also pain and challenge and grief.”
The “All of Me” singer continued, “I think knowing that we have each other’s back and support each other through it all is — you know, when you have that as your foundation, it’s everything.”
The couple met on set of Legend’s 2006 music video for his song “Stereo,” and their relationship quickly became romantic. Legend and Teigen, 39, got married in September 2013, and they went on to welcome kids Luna, 9, Miles, 7, and Esti and Wren, both 2.
While Legend and Teigen have experienced many highs throughout their relationship, they have also stood by each other’s side during several lows. In September 2020, the couple revealed they lost their son Jack when Teigen was 20 weeks pregnant after life-threatening complications.

However, the pair have proven they’ve only become stronger through their hardships. On September 14, Legend took to Instagram to share a tribute on the 12th wedding anniversary. “I love you deeply @chrissyteigen. And I love a date night. And I love the way you’re looking at me right here. 12 years married and I’m looking forward to dozens more,” he wrote alongside two photos of them enjoying a date night.
