With just under three months left of his WWE retirement tour, John Cena might be looking to fill the void with a new challenge: starting a family, perhaps. However, after recently revealing why he hasn’t started a family as of yet, his reasons have divided opinion on social media.
Cena has been one of the busiest figures in sports entertainment and Hollywood, splitting his time between the two media circles throughout 2025. He has appeared in two films this year as well as promoting the second season of DC’s Peacemaker, which premiered last month. He’s also currently filming two movies that are set for release next year. The WWE legend has also done well to fit his retirement tour around his acting career, appearing at every major Premium Live Event on WWE’s 2025 calendar.
Recently, the Never Seen 17 appeared at Fan Expo, and in typical Cena style, he was keen to openly and honestly answer questions from his fans in attendance. One female fan was particularly interested in his familial status, asking if he was ‘looking forward to having kids.’
John Cena’s Opinion on Starting a Family
“Currently no,” answered Cena, before providing some additional context to explain the decision. As highlighted earlier, Cena’s career as a Hollywood star continues to flourish and the WWE star has chosen to prioritise his career over a more societally traditional route. He also recognised that it would be irresponsible to bring a child into the world knowing what his schedule entailed and what his ambitions for the future currently are.
“From the information that I’ve gathered, you’ve kinda gotta look after [kids],” said Cena. “I’ll just give you a small insight into my life: I have been working straight for 43 days now, and I’ve got another 20 to go.
“So if I were to bring a life into this world that needs environmental nurture and unconditional love, I also know that takes time, and I’ve been blessed with some great opportunities and life has awarded me the chance to do some amazing things. And right now I wanna seize those opportunities. So I don’t want to make an irresponsible choice and bring a life into the world that I will neglect – I don’t think that’s fair.”
Fans Split on John Cena’s Opinion on Family
Despite his openness around the subject, fans on social media were still divided over Cena’s decision. One fan questioned his thoughts and suggested a lack of awareness of what true parenthood looked like, saying: “He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. Hopefully he will wake up one day and realise what is important in life.”
Another echoed this, stating, taking aim at Cena’s success: “This is the attitude that is killing humanity. The man is a millionaire. He has the resources and time to have kids.”
Leaping to the defence of Cena, however, one fan wrote that his words were “very real”, as many parents “bring children into the world without thinking about the level of sacrifice, patience, and time it takes to raise them the right way.”
Another user respected the maturity and emotional intelligence behind Cena’s thought process: “As a dad, I really respect this decision because he knows he wouldn’t be able to be the father he wants to be while being the actor he wants to be so he doesn’t put himself in a position to ruin someone’s life.”
However, one user realised what the true reason was for Cena deciding against having children: “He don’t want kids because they won’t be able to see him…”
