Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s national chairmanship position, pledging to rebuild unity, restore public trust, and lead the NPP back to power in 2028. In an official statement, Boadu said the NPP was at “a critical crossroads” following its defeat in the 2024 elections, warning that the party had lost touch with key stakeholders including the youth, business community, media, and opinion leaders. “Our beloved NPP has come far, but we are at a critical crossroad,” he said. “We have lost our media relationship, our youth support base, and the confidence of many within the business community. The only true way to restore their hope is for the NPP to win back power again.” Track record Boadu, who served as General Secretary from 2018 to 2022, positioned himself as the candidate with the experience to restore the party’s electoral strength. “At every turning point in a political party’s journey, a special kind of leader is required — one who has been tried, tested and proven through years of service and sacrifice,” he said. He cited his over 30 years of service in the party, from polling station chairman to national executive roles, as evidence of his readiness to lead. “I have the ability and proven capacity to lead our great party to victory. NPP needs to be rescued,” he added. Boadu outlined a five-point plan for his campaign: reconciliation and unity, rebuilding and rebranding the party, strengthening internal security, mobilizing sustainable funding, and reviving the NPP’s “winning machinery” through data and digital tools. “The 2028 elections will be one of the most critical in Ghana’s political history,” he said. “What the Party needs now is experience, stability, and a leader who is tried, tested, tolerant, and results-oriented — a leadership that can unite all factions, rebuild, and restore our great Party to power.” Boadu highlighted his record in previous elections, noting that the NPP’s two highest vote tallies — 5.7 million in 2016 and 6.7 million in 2020 — were achieved under his leadership as Director of Operations and General Secretary. He said he would release a comprehensive vision document in the coming days, outlining his plans to reconnect the party with its grassroots, youth, and key social groups ahead of the next national elections.
