Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially declared his intention to contest the position of National Chairman when nominations open for the party’s national leadership elections in 2026. Announcing his decision in a statement on Saturday, November 8, Mr. Boadu said the NPP is at a “critical crossroads” following its defeat in the last general elections and needs “experienced, tested, and unifying leadership” to rebuild and return to power in 2028. According to him, the party has lost touch with key stakeholder groups, including the youth, business community, the middle class, the clergy, and academia, a situation he described as deeply worrying. “Our party has drifted away from vital groups that once proudly carried the NPP flag,” he said. “We cannot afford to remain in opposition for long. There is hope for restoration, but that hope rests in leadership with proven experience and the capacity to deliver results.” Mr. Boadu said his decision followed broad consultations with party elders, executives, and grassroots members across the country. He promised to focus his campaign on five key pillars; reconciliation and unity, rebuilding and rebranding the party, strengthening internal structures and security, sustainable resource mobilisation, and modernising campaign strategies using technology and data. “The NPP needs to be rescued,” he said. “Power is won when the party is strong and guided by tried and tested leadership. This is not a time for experiments.” Outlining his record, the former General Secretary highlighted his over 30 years of service in the party, rising through the ranks from polling station chairman to the highest administrative position in the NPP. He also touted several achievements under his tenure, including leading the NPP to secure its highest electoral votes, 6.7 million in 2020, and the party’s largest parliamentary majority in 2016. Mr. Boadu stated that the 2028 elections would be crucial for the NPP’s survival, calling for unity and discipline among party members. “At this decisive moment, we cannot afford to gamble with leadership,” he said. “The NPP needs stability, tolerance, and a results-oriented vision that will unite all factions and restore our great party to power.” The former General Secretary assured party members of his commitment to rebuild the NPP and make it “great again.” Full statement JOHN BOADU OFFICIALLY DECLARES INTENT TO CONTEST NPP NATIONAL CHAIRMANSHIP Accra, Ghana – 8th November 2025 Fellow Patriots, members of the media, Party faithful and the good people of Ghana – greetings. THE STATE OF OUR PARTY My dear patriots, our beloved NPP has come far, but we are at a critical crossroad. We are currently in opposition, and as we reflect on our journey, we must admit that the Party has lost touch with many vital stakeholders that once stood firmly with us. We have lost our media relationship, our youth support base, and the confidence of many within the business community. We have drifted away from the middle-class, tertiary students, Academicians, Chiefs, the clergy, trade unions, celebrities, opinion leaders, and groups that once proudly carried the NPP flag. Our Parliamentary strength has weakened, our strength that stood at 122 in 2012, 169 in 2016, 137+ 1 in 2020 has now declined to 87seats, representing 31.5% and this calls for great concern. The rampant arrests of our Party faithfuls, the culture of silence imposed by the NDC Government, and the punitive bail conditions against our members are worrying signals. It is incredibly sad and deeply worrying to see many of our vibrant youth, who once had job opportunities under the NPP administration, being dismissed from their jobs, contracts unfairly terminated, and livelihoods disrupted. The only true way to restore their hope, their confidence, and their future is for the NPP to win back power again. Only through victory can we rebuild opportunities for our people and secure the dignity of Ghanaians. These realities demonstrate that the NPP cannot afford to stay in opposition for long. But amidst these challenges, I passionately believe, there is hope for restoration not rhetorics. And that hope rests in a leader with a proven track record, tested experience and the unmatched ability to deliver results- just as it is written in Psalm 89:20, “I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him,” and in Isaiah 58:12-13, “Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations, you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of streets with dwellings” So shall I become for our great Party- through a servant who has been tried, tested and anointed to rebuild and restore the NPP to victory. After broad consultations with founding fathers, Council of Elders, Party executives, Patrons, Nasara, Women’s wing, Youth wing, Foot soldiers, and Opinion leaders; upon sober reflections, and prayerful consideration of where our Party stands today and where it must go, I, John Boadu, wish to officially declare my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in 2026 when the nomination for National leadership is opened. WHY I AM CONTESTING: The Party is the very vehicle that carries us to our desired destination of victory. But if that vehicle is weak and lacks an experienced driver to steer it, even the strongest driver (flagbearer) cannot reach the destination. Power is won when the Party is strong and guided by tried and tested leadership in Party management. At every turning point in a political party’s journey, a special kind of leader is required; one who has been tried, tested and proven through years of service and sacrifice. Proven experience matters in every rescue mission. God entrusts His rescue missions to those whose experiences have been tested and proven. Moses had to spend 40years in Egypt to learn, grow and gain the experience needed to lead his people (Israelites) to freedom. And like David and Joshua whose courage and experience brought victory to their people, I have the ability and proven capacity lo lead our great party to victory. NPP needs to be rescued! I am the longest-serving Party officer with over 30 years of dedicated service to our great Party. I have worked at all levels – Polling station Chairman (1996-1998), Constituency Secretary (1998), Greater Accra Regional Research officer (2002-2003), Director of Finance (2002-2005) National Youth Treasurer (2003-2005), National Youth Organiser (2005-2010), National Deputy Communication Director (2010-2014), National Organiser (2014-2018), Ag. General Secretary (2015-2018) and General Secretary (2018-2022). I am one of the longest-serving members of NEC and National Council in the history of our Party. These experiences are not just years counted – they are years of sacrifice, learning and winning. This moment in our Party’s history is not a time for experiments. Article 2(3) of our Party’s Constitution clearly states that one of the primary aims and objectives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is “to win political power through democratic means in order to pursue the Party’s agenda as provided for in its manifesto for a general election.” This provision underscores a simple but powerful truth — every Party goal, whether it is unity, discipline, justice, or development, can best and fully achieved when we are in power. A political party without power is like a vehicle without fuel — it may look strong, but it cannot move forward. Indeed, the great strides our nation witnessed — the implementation of Free Health Insurance Scheme, Free Maternal health policy, School Feeding Program, Free SHS, Digitization, Agenda 111, 1D1F, Massive Road Construction, Hospitals, Schools and many more — were only possible because the NPP won power in 2000, 2004, 2016 and 2020. I am contesting because I have the experience and history of restoring power. At this moment, our party members are not seeking stories of promises nor untold history, but footprints of one who led us to victory when the battle was fiercest. For when the drums of war sound, the people remember not the talkers, but the warrior who once brought the crown home. I have led the NPP to victory at moments when hope was lost and unity was strained. I understand the science, structure, and soul of this Party and of course understand the strategies of winning elections. As National Chair, my team and I will focus on five key pillars: 1. Reconciliation and Unity Agenda – Healing divisions, rebuilding trust, and bringing every patriot together to restore the family spirit of the NPP. 2. Rebuilding and Rebranding the Party – Restoring public confidence, reconnecting with our grassroots, strengthening our communication both traditional and digital media, youth, middle class, and repositioning the NPP as a people-centered Party for development. 3. Empowering Party Structures and Strengthening Internal Security – Ensuring every Party organ functions effectively while protecting our electoral interests through a robust internal security system. 4. Mobilizing Sustainable Resources for the Party – Establishing transparent, reliable, and innovative funding mechanisms to keep the Party active and well-resourced at all levels and at all times. 5. Reviving the Winning Machinery – Modernizing elections and campaigns through data analytics, robust IT Infrastructure, digital tools, influencers, and AI-driven strategies to make the NPP unbeatable in 2028 and beyond. The highest number of votes ever achieved in Ghana’s political history, 6.7 million votes in 2020, was achieved under my watch as General Secretary and Director of Operations. The two highest number of votes ever achieved in NPP’s history are 2016;5.7million votes and 2020; 6.7million votes. These were achieved by John Boadu as the Director of Operations and General Secretary The two highest number of parliamentary seats ever won by the NPP since 1992 was in 2016, 169 seats and 137seats in 2020 under my tenure. The two highest electoral margins ever recorded by the NPP – in 2016 (985,000 votes) and 2020 (517,000 votes) – were achieved under my operational leadership. The NPP became the first political party in Africa to collate its own election results in record time – within 18hours in 2016 and just 6hours in 2020– an achievement realized under my leadership. The Pink Sheet Tracking System, a groundbreaking electoral innovation in Ghana’s Politics, was pioneered by me. And for the first time in our Party’s history, monthly subventions were sent to every constituency and region, a reform I personally initiated and implemented. These achievements are not coincidences; they are the results of hardwork, experience, dedication, and tested leadership. In the coming days, I will present a comprehensive document – one that captures my journey, my achievements, and my vision to rebuild and restore our great Party to power. This vision will speak directly to the heart of every patriot; Our founding fathers, Council of Elders, Our MPs, Our former appointees, our youth, Tescon, Party Officers, Nasara, Women, People with disability, External branches, Opinion leaders, Business Partners, Creative Arts, Academicians, Market women, Party Bloggers and the media. IN CONCLUSION The 2028 elections will be one of the most critical in Ghana’s political history. It will test the resilience of the NPP, the strength of our structures, our ability to regroup, reorganize and unite our base. At this decisive moment in our Party’s journey, we cannot afford to gamble with leadership. What the Party needs now is experience, stability, and a leader who is tried, tested, tolerant, a grassroot man, not bitter and driven by a results-oriented vision- a leadership that can unite all factions, rebuild and restore our great Party to power. We may be going through challenging times now, but this storm will surely pass. Together, we shall make NPP great again and we will win the 2028 Elections. Thank you all for your support and attention. The Office of John Boadu Fmr.
