The results of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections are out, and once again, left-leaning groups have emerged victorious. On November 4, 67% of the 9,043 students cast their votes. The Left Unity panel emerged victorious, securing all four major positions. Aditi Mishra from Banaras was elected president, defeating ABVP’s Vikas Patel by a margin of 1,861 votes, with Vikas receiving a total of 1,447 votes. K. Gopika Babu won the vice president position, Sunil Yadav became the general secretary, and Danish Ali took the role of joint secretary. Who Is Aditi Mishra? The new JNU president, Aditi Mishra, hails from Varanasi. Known for her relentless fight for justice, she completed her schooling in Bihar and graduated in Economics from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Her activism began in 2017 when she led a movement against the girls’ hostel curfew at BHU, successfully overturning the rule that prevented girls from going out after 8 PM. From Puducherry To JNU: The Movement Goes On Aditi continued her activism during her Master’s in South Asian Studies at Puducherry University. In 2018, she led a protest at the Vice Chancellor’s office, advocating for students’ rights. In 2019, she opposed fee hikes and joined nationwide protests against the CAA-NRC. In 2020, she championed the rights of marginalised students, including Dalits, Adivasis, and transgender people. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD at JNU’s School of International Studies, focusing on resistance against gendered violence in Uttar Pradesh since 2012. Played An Active Role In AISA Aditi is associated with the All India Students’ Association (AISA), a key part of Left Unity. She is a second-year PhD student and a member of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), which addresses complaints of sexual harassment on campus. In her role, she presented reports to ensure transparency and that all genders—male, female, and transgender—are heard. At AISA, she worked to ensure representation for students from all backgrounds. Her focus is on gender justice, progressive values, and democratic rights. In this election, she also highlighted issues like campus accessibility, declining quality of education, and rising fees, emphasizing that education should be accessible to everyone. Aditi Emerged As A Role Model Aditi Mishra’s victory over ABVP has made her an inspiration for women everywhere. The campus is in a celebratory mood, with red flags waving and slogans echoing. Her leadership is the culmination of years of hard work, activism, and standing in solidarity with fellow students.
