Jiu-Jitsu Athlete Who represented India In Asian Games Found Dead at Home, Suicide Suspected

The Indian athletic community is in grief for the loss of a gifted athlete after the death of international Jiu-Jitsu player and coach Rohini Kalam at her house in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday. The 35-year-old, who proudly represented India at the Asian Games was discovered dead at her home. According to police, the first investigation suggests that she committed suicide. The body of the Jiu-Jitsu athlete was found in the family's house in Arjun Nagar, Radhaganj, by Rohini's younger sister, Roshni Kalam. Roshni raised the alarm as soon as she saw her sister hanging in her room. After being taken to a local hospital, Rohini was declared dead by the doctors. The athlete's father, a retired employee of Bank Note Press, was also out of the house at the time of the occurrence, while her mother and a sibling were on their way to a temple. No suicide note was found at the scene, according to investigators. Roshni, Rohini's sister, told investigators about the days before the tragedy. After apparently experiencing significant stress at work, Rohini, a martial arts coach at a private school in Ashta, came home to Dewas on Saturday. She had breakfast and tea as usual on Sunday morning, then talked on the phone before withdrawing to her room and shutting the door. Knowing the type of stress her sister was under, Roshni stated: "She was worried about her job. The faculty at her school were troubling her. Her school's principal was troubling her. I could sense it from the way she was speaking on her phone." The family provided more insight into the difficulties Rohini encountered. Her father observed that Rohini, the oldest of five children, had frequently turned down proposals of marriage for focusing on her aspirational career as an IPS officer. In addition, she had been trying to win the Vikram Award for the past two years. Additionally, the family said that she had been unwell ever since undergoing surgery five months prior to treat a stomach lump. She was driven over the brink by work-related stress, according to her relatives. In terms of sports, Rohini started in 2007 and became a professional Jiu-Jitsu practitioner in 2015. She had the unique distinction of being the sole Indian athlete chosen for the World Games in Birmingham, and she competed for India in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. She won two medals in the 8th Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024 in Abu Dhabi: one in the duo classic event and another in the 48 kg division at the Thailand Open Grand Prix 2022. To fully ascertain the facts behind the renowned athlete's death, authorities have begun an investigation and filed a case at the Bank Note Press police station. Reports from the post-mortem examination are still pending.
