Jimmy Kimmel’s Tuesday night return to television screens will not be carried on Tulsa’s KTUL channel 8 or other stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting Group.
KTUL is owned and operated by Sinclair Broadcasting Group, which released this statement Monday: “Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”
ABC announced Sept. 17 that Kimmel had been suspended. The suspension came two days after the talk show host made comments related to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In his Sept. 15 monologue, Kimmel said, among other things, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize (the person who shot Kirk) as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Kimmel also had something to say about how he viewed the sincerity of President Donald Trump’s grieving.
The head of the Federal Communications Commission condemned Kimmel’s comments. ABC announced Kimmel would be suspended indefinitely. On Monday, Walt Disney-owned ABC released this statement: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive, We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Sinclair followed with its announcement that Kimmel would be preempted on its ABC stations. A Tulsa World call to KTUL’s vice president and general manager, Amy Calvert, was not immediately returned.
According to information on KTUL’s website, Sinclair owns and operates, programs or provides sales services to 163 television stations in 77 markets, after pending transactions. Sinclair’s television group reaches approximately 38.7% of U.S. TV households and includes FOX, ABC, MyTV, CW, CBS, NBC, Univision and Azteca affiliates.
