Jimmy Butler reportedly presses Warriors on Jonathan Kuminga situation

Veteran forward Jimmy Butler has reached out directly to the Warriors to get answers on where things stand with Jonathan Kuminga, according to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Media day is right around the corner and Kuminga remains a restricted free agent.

“I can confidently say that Jimmy Butler has also reached out to the team and been like, ‘What’s going on here? I just want to know the plan,’” Johnson said.

Butler, of course, is in the middle of his own Golden State chapter. He forced his way away from the Heat last season and was dealt to the Warriors in February, later signing a two-year, $110 million extension. Now, it seems, he wants to know what’s going on with his young teammate.

Golden State reportedly offered Kuminga a three-year, $75.2 million deal with a team option in Year 3. Kuminga declined, preferring a player option instead. His agent, Aaron Turner, countered with a three-year, $82 million proposal — including that player option — but general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the front office rejected it.

Kuminga’s strained relationship with coach Steve Kerr isn’t helping. Reports say the two have never really meshed, while the Kings have let Kuminga know they view him as an All-Star in waiting under coach Doug Christie. That message reportedly resonated with Kuminga.

For now, his $7.9 million qualifying offer remains on the table. Signing it would make him a no-trade clause player for 2025-26 and set him up for unrestricted free agency next summer — when multiple cap-space teams are expected to line up for him.

The 22-year-old averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 47 games last season. He showed flashes in the playoffs, but playing time only came when Butler and Stephen Curry were sidelined.

All signs continue to point toward Kuminga taking that qualifying offer and preparing for a bigger payday — and possibly a new home — in 2026.
