Jimmie Johnson‘s Legacy Motor Club team had announced an agreement with Rick Ware Racing to take its Cup Series charter. However, RWR backed down on the deal and claimed that the deal was for 2027 and not 2026.

Following a string of legal disputes and lawsuits between the two parties, Johnson has finally put the matter to an end, and both parties have come to a final conclusion regarding the charter sale for the coming season.

Jimmie Johnson was supposed to undertake Rick Ware Racing’s Charter No. 27 (currently leased to RFK Racing). However, RWR claimed that the charter sale was only for No.36, which Legacy Motor Club already owned.

Moreover, Spire Motorsports’ former owner, T.J. Puchyr, purchased RWR and meddled in the team’s original deal to sell the charters to Johnson’s LMC. The sale for the team was put on hold until the charter dispute was resolved between the two teams.

A settlement has reportedly arrived between Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing, as the two have come to a final conclusion on the matter. While the exact details of the settlement are confidential, RWR will indeed sell a NASCAR charter to LMC and then transfer ownership. Jimmie Johnson opened up on the recent agreement between the two teams and provided clarity on the matter.

Jimmie Johnson insisted that a positive outcome was important for all the parties involved. Johnson noted that he had a lot of respect for the efforts put in by Robby Benton and team owner Rick Ware to reach an ultimate decision. The 50-year-old now hopes to focus on the business operations and future goals of the team and move forward with everyone involved in the project positively.

After Jimmie Johnson legally sued Rick Ware Racing and Co. for the issues in the charter sale, the trial was scheduled for January 2026. The entire situation would have been dragged unnecessarily longer than required and cause troubles to LMC regarding their charter status next year. However, Rick Ware and others involved pulled through and solved the matter without dragging it for any longer than required.
