As the woeful New York Jets look to salvage what’s quickly becoming one of the worst seasons in recent memory, perhaps undrafted rookie defensive tackle Fatorma Mulbah can emerge as an unexpected contributor. The winless Jets announced on Tuesday that they’ve signed Mulbah, who played collegiately at Penn State and West Virginia, to their practice squad. Mulbah, 23, spent this past summer with the Jets but was waived in late August. “Played well for them this preseason and can now continue his development there,” agent Brett Tessler wrote on Twitter/X. The Jets had not announced a corresponding move as of publication. What to Know About New Jets DT Fatorma Mulbah Originally from Harrisburg, Pa., the 6-foot-4, 306-pound Mulbah began his career at Penn State. After racking up four tackles in 19 games with the Nittany Lions, Mulbah transferred to West Virginia and immediately worked his way into the Mountaineers’ defensive rotation. Although Mulbah only started one game in his first season at WVU, he tallied 25 tackles, three for a loss, and half a sack on 237 defensive snaps. Mulbah saved his best for last, totaling 4.5 tackles for a loss and one sack on a WVU team that finished 6-7 and lost to Memphis in the Frisco Bowl. ESPN, 247 Sports, and Rivals all considered Mulbah a three-star prospect coming out of high school. All three services considered him a top-10 player in the state of Pennsylvania, with ESPN even ranking him No. 5 behind Ohio State receiver Julian Fleming, Notre Dame offensive tackle Michael Carmody, Pittsburgh defensive tackle Dayon Hayes, and Penn State defensive end Zuriah Fisher. What’s Next for Mulbah and the Jets? Very rarely do practice squad signings involving undrafted rookies move the needle, but the Jets have enough going on that even a significant transaction might go under the radar. Last Sunday’s humiliating 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers dropped the Jets to 0-7, and they remain the league’s only winless team. Things just keep getting worse, though. Owner Woody Johnson blasted quarterback Justin Fields at the league meetings on Tuesday, and rookie head coach Aaron Glenn is expected to name Tyrod Taylor the starting quarterback ahead of Sunday’s game with the Cincinnati Bengals. Taylor, a 36-year-old journeyman backup in his second season with the Jets, went 10-of-22 for 126 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Fields against the Panthers. We’ll see whether Mulbah eventually gets an opportunity to crack the 53-man roster, especially given the Jets’ downward trajectory. Despite all of the massive organizational changes, the Jets are well on their way to a sixth straight double-digit loss season.
