Jeremiah Thompson defeats incumbent to win seat on Onondaga County Legislature

Jeremiah Thompson won election to the Onondaga County Legislature’s 4th district Tuesday with 56.19% of the vote. Thompson, a Democrat, defeated the incumbent Colleen A. Gunnip, a Republican, who has already served three terms on the legislature. Thompson received 3,399 votes to Gunnip’s 2,646, which represented 43.74% of the vote. The 4th district includes the village of Liverpool, town of Salina, town of Geddes and village of Solvay. The legislature position is part-time and pays $38,748. Thompson, 47, is a Syracuse University writing instructor and chair of the Liverpool Zoning Board of Appeals. A first-time candidate, he occasionally acts in local theater, most recently playing Felix Harel in “Les Trois Dumas.” His priorities include education, workforce development, transportation, small business support and arts funding. Across her three terms, Gunnip, 63, also chaired the Ways and Means Committee. She has spent more than two decades in local government, including roles as Salina town supervisor and positions in the county’s Department of Transportation and Department of Social Services.
