Jennifer Wrynne has revealed that being strong for her children has given her strength and focus after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
The popular fashion influencer was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 36, and only weeks after welcoming her fourth child, after she discovered a lump by chance, in what initially seemed like a harmless side effect of being recently postpartum.
And while the news was a shock Jennifer says that her only real fear was for her children. “You’re nearly more frightened for them than yourself. Before I had kids, my approach to life was like, if I die today, I’m going to be really happy because I lived a great life. But when you have kids, I thought I just couldn’t die. I need to live for these little people. They are your total priority”, she told RSVP magazine.
“I just thought ‘Oh, Jesus Christ, I need to do whatever it takes’.”
Luckily Jennifer revealed her diagnosis is very treatable and she is embarking on a year long treatment plan. And while she admits she is nervous for the coming months, her four children have been a wonderful source of distraction.
“Luckily the diagnosis for me, it’s good. You know, it is not great to be in this situation, but it is going to be fine”, she added.
“I just have to get up each morning and keep going for them. They have been a great distraction.”
Jennifer is trying cold capping during her chemotherapy treatment in a bid to help prevent hair loss and while she admitted it will be a small price to pay for her health, the unknown of how the next few months will progress is one of the most difficult parts of her journey so far.
“The unknown is really hard. And, honestly, obviously I’m anxious about my hair, and if I will lose it. I am trying the cold cap but will it work? I know if I do lose my hair, it’s a small price to pay. But again, it’s that unknown. I don’t know the answers to any of these things, that’s a really hard part”, she said.
Another factor in hoping to keep her hair is the inevitable questions it would raise from her children, with Jennifer explaining that for now, herself and husband Colm have made the decision not to speak to her children about her illness due to their young age.
“At the moment the plan is not to [tell them about it]. They are so young, so I don’t think we need to. I’d like to tell them as little as I have to.”
“But if I do lose my hair, it’s something I’ll have to explain to them. But right now they are so young and innocent. I want to preserve that innocence as long as I can for their sake.”
One positive thing that has come from her diagnosis is the conversation it has opened with other women, with Jennifer revealing it also gave her comfort to be able to find some good in her situation.
“Some of followers have been with me for so long, some of them over 15 years, I felt almost a duty of care also to raise awareness on checking your breasts. I felt there was a good purpose to it. And I suppose being able to take some control and put some good on this situation makes me feel a little better about it all.”
And already Jennifer says women have contacted her after checking their breasts following her story and have found lumps which are now being investigated.
“I’ve had people contact me to say they checked and found lumps and are now getting them checked. Hopefully they’re not cancerous because 90% of lumps aren’t. But if it saves one person’s life, then it’s worth it.”
“It’s so much more common than we think. I see that from the messages I’m getting. It’s incredible how many young women have breast cancer that you just don’t hear about.”
