BOSTON — When Jaylen Brown said he wanted to meet Bill Nye, he likely didn’t expect his friendship with “the science guy” to include multiple steps. But after meeting last year, Brown and Nye added another page to their friendship Monday.
Last week, Brown flew out to Los Angeles to say a few words after Nye got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Then Monday, at the Auerbach Center as part of Celtics media day, Brown hosted Nye at the facility. As part of his livestream on Twitch, Brown also did some science experiments with Nye.
“I feel like it’s Celtic history being able to have Bill Nye in the Auerbach Center practice facility, so that’s pretty cool,” Brown said. “We’re gonna do some science experiments downstairs and I always say in the inner child in me, but just me right now is excited. It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to be here and talk about things outside of just sports and how it also correlates. You have sports, but how sports correlates to science and education and learning and how if we merge these worlds that you can have a real impact on the next generation.”
Nye, 69, holds a special place in a lot of hearts as “Bill Nye the science guy.” He was the host of a popular science education television show that aired from 1993-97, which was played in schools across the nation. Brown, 28, was part of the generation that got plenty of Nye at school growing up.
Brown and Nye first met at a Wizards game last season, right after the Celtics visited the White House coming off their 2024 title. Nye was at the game, and afterwards, Brown briefly got to meet the famous actor. Since then, Brown and Nye have had a friendship together with an eye on educating children about the joys of science and more.
“The guy flew out to LA just to say a few words,” Nye told reporters Monday. “He’s got a life to life. He’s very wealthy. He doesn’t need to do that. But he was very gracious. Of course, he’s charming. Everybody was delighted to see him. … I get choked up. He flew across the country to just say a few words at this walk of fame thing. It was really remarkable.”
