Jay Jones’ Chances of Beating Jason Miyares in Virginia: Final Polls

Democratic candidate Jay Jones and Republican incumbent Jason Miyares are locked in a tight race to win the attorney general race in Virginia and the race looks too close to call, the latest polls indicate. According to multiple polls, Jones is marginally leading Miyares who has been in the role since 2022, as voting in the election is underway. However, these surveys’ leads are within the margins of error and other polls show that Miyares is narrowly in the lead. Newsweek reached out to Jones and Miyares by email to comment on this story outside of normal business hours. Why It Matters The Virginia attorney general race has attracted national scrutiny especially after leaked texts revealed Jones previously suggested a former Virginia House speaker should receive “two bullets to the head,” negatively affecting his previously strong polling lead. Jones apologized for the texts, but whether they prove to upend his campaign remains to be seen. What To Know Three polls suggest Jones has taken a narrow lead—but in all these polls his lead is within the margin of error. According to the latest Emerson College/The Hill survey, Jones leads incumbent Miyares 49 percent to 47 percent among likely voters. Some 880 likely voters were surveyed between October 30 and 31, with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points. Meanwhile, a Quantus Insights snap poll of 1,201 likely voters found that 47.4 percent would vote for Jones and 46.9 percent would choose Miyares. This poll, conducted on November 3, had a 2.7 percentage point margin of error. An InsiderAdvantage survey of 800 likely voters gave Jones a 2 percentage point lead—49 to 47. The survey was conducted between November 2 and 3 and had a margin of error of 3.46 percent. Another survey of 1,057 likely voters conducted by The Trafalgar Group found that Miyares is slightly in the lead with 46.3 percent of the vote share to Jones’ 45.5 percent. The poll was conducted between November 1 and 2 and had a 2.9 percentage point margin of error. What People Are Saying Democratic candidate Jay Jones wrote on X Friday: “We’re in the final days of the election, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Let’s show up, get out the vote, and shape our future together.” Republican incumbent Jason Miyares posted on X earlier this month: “Virginians are good and decent people, and they expect their leaders to carry themselves with civility, decorum, and integrity. That’s why I’m asking you to rehire me to serve as your attorney general for four more years.” InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery said in a statement that Jones “has managed to survive brutal texts from his past to be slightly ahead again in that race.” What Happens Next As well as choosing the attorney general, voters are electing a governor, lieutenant governor and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates.
