Jasmine Crockett Teases Senate Bid

LOADINGERROR LOADING WASHINGTON – Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) suggested Wednesday she’s considering a run for Senate following a GOP-led redraw of the state’s congressional districts. If courts bless the new district maps, Crockett said, she’ll have to decide whether to run in a new district, since her Dallas-based district will cease to exist. Advertisement “And then the other option is, every other day there’s a poll that comes out that makes it clear that I can win the primary for the U.S. Senate race in Texas,” Crockett said on SiriusXM’s “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show.” “And I am looking.” “Because if you want to take my seat of 766,000 away, I feel like there has to be some karma in that to where I take your seat that is for 30 million away,” Crockett continued. “So we are, you know, the primary is the primary. That’s cool, but you got to win the general. So we are doing some testing here shortly to see if I can expand the electorate.” Democrats are likely to be skeptical that Crockett’s in-your-face style, which wins her plaudits in her current bright blue congressional district and kudos from national liberals, will translate to a statewide victory in Texas. President Donald Trump won the state by 14 percentage points in 2024. A chaotic GOP primary in the state has given Democrats the slimmest of hopes they can pull off an upset and claim the seat now held by Republican Sen. John Cornyn. Perhaps more than any other House member, Crockett has embodied the theory among younger Democratic lawmakers that the way to best Republicans in the Trump era is to beat them at their own game. There are already two high-profile candidates competing in the Democratic primary in Texas: former Rep. Colin Allred, who lost to Sen. Ted Cruz in 2024 despite running 5 points better than former Vice President Kamala Harris, and state Rep. James Talarico, whose faith-centric style of politics has translated to virality and helped him raise a whopping $6.2 million in his first months in the race. Crockett is also a strong fundraiser: She raised $2.7 million last quarter and has $4.6 million on hand. And she’s not wrong that polling shows she could win a primary: A University of Houston/Texas Southern University poll showed Crockett performing strongly with Black voters and winning a primary that includes Talarico and Allred. Advertisement Crockett is a much bigger newsmaker than Allred or Talarico. Her highest-profile dustup was with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) during a House Oversight Committee hearing last year. Greene commented on Crockett’s “fake eyelashes,” prompting Crockett to insult Greene’s “bleach blond, bad-built butch body,” a phrase that went viral and that Crockett quickly memorialized with campaign merchandise. Other Crockett slams have fallen flat, such as the time she called Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott “Governor Hot Wheels.” Abbott uses a wheelchair; Crockett claimed she was referring to his practice of busing immigrants to Democratic cities. Earlier this year, Crockett tried to become the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee following the death of Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), but her colleagues passed her over in favor of another second-term Democrat, Rep. Robert Garcia (Calif.). Crockett received the fewest votes out of the four Democrats vying for the “ranking member” role. Advertisement On Wednesday, Crockett said she doesn’t believe in traditional polling and that she thinks she might be able to draw votes from people who don’t respond to pollsters. She also emphasized the idea of “expanding” the electorate, an idea that has largely fallen out of favor in a Democratic Party now focused more on winning over working-class voters. “I think that the key to winning Texas isn’t about looking at the current electorate,” she said. “It’s about expanding the electorate. So the question will be whether or not we believe that we’ve got enough juice to expand the electorate and looking at those cross tabs and looking at which demographics are more inclined to come out, who normally do not vote. If we can expand the electorate, then I will strongly be considering hopping in the Senate race.” MAGA makes'your mom'jokes. Democratic hopes of winning the Senate race, regardless of who their candidate is, may depend on the outcome of the GOP primary. Scandal-plagued Attorney General Ken Paxton is challenging Cornyn in a primary, and Rep. Wesley Hunt has also entered the race. Democrats and Republicans alike believe a Paxton victory would give Democrats a shot at winning the seat in a midterm year where the political environment is likely to favor them.
