Japan to Tighten Visa Rules on Foreigners Behind on Health Insurance

Foreign residents staying in Japan for more than three months who are not enrolled in their company’s health insurance are required to join the National Health Insurance system. However, as of the end of last year, only 63 percent of foreign members had paid their premiums, according to a government survey. In response, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Immigration Services Agency have decided to implement a system to restrict visa renewals or status changes for foreigners who refuse to pay. Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Keizo Ueno said: "From the perspective of realizing an orderly, mutually respectful society where Japanese and foreigners can live safely and securely, it is essential to promote appropriate use of the social security system." Preparations are now underway to ensure the system can begin operation in June 2027. Source: TBS
