Japanese people are known for their kindness and hospitality, which are deeply rooted in the cultural concept of Omotenashi. It is a philosophy of a selfless and wholehearted approach to serving guests. It goes beyond simple service to include anticipating a guest’s needs before they are even aware of them, emphasising respect, thorough attention to detail and offering a positive and comfortable emotional welcome. Well, it looks like not every individual in Japan tends to follow this tradition. Recently, a Chinese Tourist shared her ordeal at the Land of the Rising Sun, where she and her friend were subjected to verbal assault and forcefully removed from a restaurant. And the reason? Their clothes. Two Chinese Tourists Kicked Out Of Restaurant In Japan As per the South China Morning Post, the incident happened in late August when a Chinese blogger, along with a friend, went to a popular Thai restaurant, Baan Thai Market in Kobe, Japan. Sharing her experience on a Chinese social media platform, she documented that both of them were verbally assaulted and kicked out of a popular restaurant simply for wearing sports vests and loose trousers, which the owner deemed “too revealing.” According to the post, when they entered the restaurant, the owner made a disrespectful comment: “Summer is ended. You don’t have to come out naked anymore.” The situation worsened when they were still eating. The manager and staff hurried over, snatched their chopsticks, cleaned their plates, and carried away the entire meal without asking if they were finished. “I went to pay the bill and asked the manager how much it was. He completely ignored me, only looking at the computer screen as if to say we should check it ourselves,” she wrote. This Was Not Just The Only Case Later on, when the blogger checked the restaurant’s reviews on Google, she noticed that several other customers had also had a similar experience at the restaurant and with the manager. “I checked the Google reviews and realised many people had experienced discrimination from the same manager. The number of negative reviews is staggering,” the post added. As per the South China Morning Post, this year, Japan surpassed Thailand as the most popular overseas travel destination for Chinese travellers, thanks to relaxed visa restrictions, a cheap yen, and a growing interest in distinctive experiences such as food tourism.
