Jannik Sinner has reflected on his Wimbledon Championships triumph, pointing out that it was a miracle he didn’t crash out in the round of 16 of the tournament. The World No.1 was just one set away from falling to Grigor Dimitrov before an unexpected event made him clinch the quarter-finals ticket. Sinner was in great form before his encounter against Dimitrov. The World No.1 had breezed through the early round matches at the All England Club and was the favorite to advance to the last eight against Dimitrov. But, surprisingly, Dimitrov showed flashes of his younger self on the court and battled his way through the first three rounds. He had dropped only one set in three matches before facing Sinner at Wimbledon, and looked to be in better form against Sinner, winning the first two sets, and was about to serve in the third set with the score being 2-2. But he unfortunately hurt himself and eventually requested a medical timeout. The Bulgarian star was forced to forfeit the match as he could no longer continue, which granted Sinner a quarter-finals berth despite trailing by two sets in the tie. Sinner went on to win Wimbledon, beating Ben Shelton, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz en route to his fourth Grand Slam title. During his interview with Sky Sports Italia, Sinner was asked how he felt after surprisingly getting past Dimitrov despite his own two sets. The World No.1 narrated that it was a sort of miracle that happened in the match and that helped him gain the confidence he needed to win the title: I was losing the match against Grigor, I was very close. A sort of “miracle” happened there, you don’t want to win like that, but it happened. I said, ‘I wonder if it’s a sign.’ In the semifinals, I played very well against Djokovic and gained confidence to play a great final. I was up a break in the first set, which I lost, and I thought, ‘Here we go again. Then I sat there and tried to be the improved player since Paris, I wanted to make myself understand that. Sinner faced Alcaraz in the final of the Wimbledon Championships, ending the Spaniard’s hopes of winning the title for the third consecutive year. It was also his revenge for the French Open final loss he suffered in June. However, that was the only tour-level match Sinner managed to beat Alcaraz this season.
