Jamie Carragher explains why Arsenal have a big Viktor Gyokeres problem

Viktor Gyokeres endured another quiet display against a big title rival, but Jamie Carragher defended the Arsenal striker’s performance against Man City.

After struggling in defeat against Liverpool earlier this month and in the win at Manchester United in August, Gyokeres struggled to assert himself on City’s sturdy defence on Sunday. His lack of output being in stark contrast to the three goals in two games against struggling Leeds and Nottigham Forest.

Gyokeres failed to have a shot against City at the Emirates, and touched the ball just 24 times despite playing the full 90 minutes, fewer than any other player.

But Carragher jumped to Gyokeres’ defence, insisting the problem lies with Gyokeres’ team-mates rather than the striker.

He said on Sky Sports: “It was asked before the show ‘is Gyokeres the guy to win them the title?’ and he’s had a little bit of criticism for his performances in the big games away.

“He hasn’t had a kick today and he might get criticism again on the back of the game today, but I don’t think in those three games he’s had a chance. They haven’t created a chance for him.

“So I go back to when people keep saying ‘Arsenal’s problem is finishing’, but it’s not, it’s creating. They don’t create enough … they haven’t created one chance for him.”
