Albeit heartbreaking, actor James Van Der Beek is being proactive and financially responsible as he continues to battle cancer, choosing to auction off significant memorabilia from his storied career to pay for his ongoing treatment. Partnering with auction house Propstore, Van Der Beek is selling items featured on his popular television series, Dawson’s Creek as well as his 1999 film, Varsity Blues. All proceeds directly benefit the actor. “I’ve been storing these treasures for years, waiting for the right time to do something with them, and with all of the recent unexpected twists and turns life has presented recently, it’s clear that the time is now,” Van Der Beek said, per People Magazine. But more than that, I really wanted to raise awareness.” In September, the actor was forced to miss a highly anticipated Dawson’s Creek reunion due to illness. The actor was able to leave a pre-recorded message for fans. The starting bid for the piece, which has an estimated worth of approximately $23,000-46,000, is $11,500. Several articles of clothing are also up for auction, including an orange flannel shirt worn by Van Der Beek, as well as the outfit his character wore in the pilot episode back in 1998. Set decorations and a chair slip adorned with ‘Dawson’ are also for sale. From Varsity Blues, the 48-year-old actor is selling a pair of Reebok cleats worn by his character, Jonathan ‘Mox’ Moxons, as well as a baseball cap worn during a consequential football scene where Van Der Beek’s character replaces injured football quarterback Lance Harbor, played by the late Paul Walker. “While I have some nostalgia tugging at me as I part with these items, it feels good to be able to offer them through Propstore’s auction to share with those who have supported my work over the years,” Van Der Beek noted. Items from Van Der Beek’s collection will be auctioned off on December 6 as part of the Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction event, which spans 3 days.
