James Franklin Linked to SEC Powerhouse After Being Fired by Penn State

Former Penn State coach James Franklin is looking for a new job, and with multiple SEC programs looking for a new leader, he should have a good deal of options. It has been a handful of weeks since the Nittany Lions let Franklin go, though it only took him a few days to make his feelings on his career clear. "I don't know anything else," Franklin said. "I've been doing this for 30 years. I don't have hobbies. I don't golf. I don't fish. This has been such a big part of my identity, such a big part of my family. We love it." Franklin will find it tricky to get a job like the one he had at Penn State. Instead, he may need to take a step down and help a struggling program turn its trajectory around. According to college football expert Bryan Fischer, Franklin could be a candidate for Auburn, which is seeking a replacement for Hugh Freeze. "Franklin has spent much of his career north of the Mason-Dixon Line, but the one time he ventured south, he wound up winning 18 games in two years at Vanderbilt (without a Diego Pavia to do so either)," Fischer wrote in a story on Sports Illustrated. "This would be the most experienced, accomplished coach that Auburn could hire, and you know he would be excited to dive right in at a place like this if he can overcome the questions about the end of his Penn State tenure." Despite Franklin's flaws at Penn State, he has a track record of developing talent and maximizing his recruiting resources. Penn State saw numerous talented players walk through its doors with Franklin at the helm, with many of them going on to excel in the NFL. Franklin could rebuild a sleeping giant and reconstruct his standing as an elite college football coach, positioning himself for another top role down the line.
