Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been taken to hospital in the capital, Brasília, after suddenly falling ill, one of his sons confirmed. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro said the right-wing leader had suffered a “severe bout of hiccups, vomiting and low blood pressure”, according to a Bloomberg report. A panel of Supreme Court justices on Thursday found the ex-leader guilty of attempting a coup to illegally hang onto power despite his 2022 electoral defeat to current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. They sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison. The sentence doesn’t immediately send Bolsonaro to prison. The court panel has up to 60 days to publish the ruling after the decision. Once it does, Bolsonaro’s lawyers have five days to file motions for clarification. Bolsonaro has been serving house arrest since early August, fitted with an ankle monitor after judges ruled he was a flight risk. His health has been fragile ever since he was stabbed in the stomach during a 2018 campaign rally. His lawyers are expected to cite his condition in efforts to have his prison sentence converted to house arrest. On Sunday, the former president was admitted to the same hospital for a procedure to remove skin lesions. Doctors also flagged iron-deficiency anaemia and signs of aspiration pneumonia. He was discharged the same day. The hospital has yet to issue a statement on his treatment on Tuesday.
