Not many people were picking the Jacksonville Jaguars to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, even though the Chiefs came into the game with a disappointing 2-2 record. When the Chiefs took a 28-24 lead with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter on Kareem Hunt’s rushing touchdown, it looked like they were on their way to getting over the .500 mark.
But Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence then made something out of nothing with 30 seconds left. After stumbling and falling to the ground following the snap, he found a seam in Kansas City’s defense and took the ball to the end zone himself. It was his second rushing touchdown of the evening, and it gave his team an unlikely 31-28 win, not to mention a 4-1 record.

The Jaguars are starting to look like a strong team five weeks into the 2025 NFL season. But analyst Steve Fezzik reminded everyone that Lawrence isn’t quite all that. He opined that the signal-caller’s go-ahead touchdown was nothing more than a fluke.
“I don’t like Trevor Lawrence at all,” Fezzik said. “That final drive was a train wreck. He was horrible, and somehow they score a touchdown.”

Lawrence hasn’t lived up to the expectations people had for him when he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had been a big-time star at Clemson University and led the school to a win in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game as a freshman.
He was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2020 and the ACC Athlete of the Year the following season, and he was compared to former Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks John Elway and Peyton Manning upon entering the pros.
But while he had a solid second season in the NFL, during which he threw for 4,113 yards and 25 touchdowns and was named to the Pro Bowl, he has struggled since. So far this season, he has completed just 60.4% of his pass attempts and thrown for 1,066 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Indeed, the Jaguars have largely been winning the old-school way so far this season — by running the football and shutting down opponents. Running back Travis Etienne is fourth in the league with 443 rushing yards, and the team entered Thursday ranked eighth in points allowed.
Two-way rookie Travis Hunter is slowly coming along. He caught three passes for 64 yards, including a 44-yard reception in the third quarter, and on the other side of the football, he had two tackles and one pass defended.

A lot of the criticism Lawrence has gotten seems to be centered around the five-year, $275 million contract extension he agreed to last June. It is looking more and more like he’s simply unable to live up to that dollar amount, no matter how hard he tries.
