Jacinta Allan’s little porky speaks to a bigger problem

Jacinta Allan was this week caught in a fib. It wasn’t a grievous lie, just a little porky of the “sorry, something came up” variety people resort to when they agree to do one thing and get a better offer to do something else.

Allan had agreed to speak at a Monday morning event organised by the Victorian Council of Social Service, the representative body for mainly not-for-profit organisations that help the state’s most disadvantaged people access housing, health and disability services and deal with family violence.

It was a significant gathering of social service leaders, promoted by VCOSS as its event of the year, with the premier given top billing on the list of those attending. But in the days leading up her scheduled appearance, Allan was declared a no-show.

In making the premier’s apologies, Allan’s office explained to VCOSS organisers she had to fly to Sydney on the Sunday evening before the event for a meeting with the prime minister and couldn’t guarantee she’d get back to Melbourne in time.
