Three months ago, I was at a garage inspecting a second-hand Ford Fiesta with my father. Glossy red and in mint condition, it was the perfect first car for an 18-year-old like me who’d been driving for just six months.
Still, imagine the seller’s shock when the £3,000 asking price came, in cash, from my purse while my dad’s wallet remained firmly closed.
Where did I get the money from? The Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) I’ve been claiming since I was 14.
From 14 to 16, I received £189.60 DLA a month because I had been diagnosed with OCD. At 16, I was moved onto PIP and also developed the eating disorder bulimia, meaning the amount I got went up.
Suddenly, I banked (well Mum did on my behalf) £290.60 a month for my mental health issues.
Today I’m at college and, to be honest, I’m in very good health – but I’m still claiming. In all, I’ve had more than £11,000 in disability benefits.
Last week’s news that there were 250 new successful PIP claims every single day for anxiety or mood disorders in Labour’s first year of government, with the fastest rise among the young, doesn’t surprise me.
What mystifies me isn’t why people like me claim this magic money – it’s there, why shouldn’t I? – but why the government hands it out in such generous sums.

For the truth is, my mental health issues were just a blip, a phase, and, though they were bad at the time, I don’t honestly know why I needed extra money to cope with them. I didn’t need a wheelchair or a cleaner or any kind of special equipment.
We’re not a family who live on benefits. Ironically, both my parents work in the care system and they own our West Midlands home.
I’m the oldest of three; I’ve got my own bedroom – kitted out with a ring light and iPhone so I can record my TikToks (I do everything from my Get Ready With Me morning make-up videos to selling beauty products online).
What I do know is I’m no outlier. There are now 600,000 people claiming PIP for anxiety and depression, and 60,000 of them are young. Indeed, claims from under 25s are up by 17 per cent since Labour took office, with 17,287 new awards.
To be fair, the OCD I was diagnosed with when I was 14 was fairly debilitating and worrying for my parents. My watch word for my behaviour back then was ‘compulsion’ – I’d have to flick a light switch off and on a certain number of times; I could only ever take a shower at 8pm; and if I was brushing my teeth, I had to brush each tooth 20 times.
If I failed to do these tasks properly, I’d get intrusive thoughts telling me awful things would happen to my mum. She realised my behaviour was irrational and having seen a programme on TV about David Beckham having a similar disorder, took me to the GP, where I was diagnosed with OCD.

Things went downhill shortly after that when my grandmother paid for my bedroom to be redecorated as a surprise. I couldn’t cope with the change and had a meltdown. I got taken to A&E and was admitted to a CAMHS emergency unit for four hours. I didn’t go to school for two weeks.
I saw a psychiatrist once a week for a month and she put me on the antidepressant sertraline (at 25mg, it was upped to 50mg a month later). After that I saw her every two months for a year. I stopped taking the medication a year later when I was 15, however.
It was my choice because I didn’t think it was doing anything for me. Besides, talking to the psychiatrist had given me good strategies for recognising when the intrusive thoughts popped up and I’d know not to spiral into the loop of compulsive behaviour.
Whoever we saw at CAMHS advised my mum to apply for Disability Living Allowance and so she did. Apparently, it was to be used for driving to and from hospital appointments and also to cover the costs of any taxis, though that was never going to amount to £189 a month.
I don’t know why Mum also received a carers allowance (isn’t caring what mums do?) but she did. I’m assuming it was because she had to take some days off to look after me.
Mum was scrupulously honest about the money but told me that my amount was going into her bank account. I wanted to get a new iPad but she said no, it was to go towards driving lessons. At school, I was bored and only went for the social life if I’m honest.
Life was great for a while but, 18 months later, I had a standoff with Mum. For the previous six months I’d been eating one meal a day and throwing it up and now she locked me in a room with her and told me to eat some breakfast in front of her. Was I attention seeking? No. Everyone on social media is slim and I wanted to look the same. Yet Mum still took me to A&E when we had our stand-off.
Once again we got referred to CAMHS, who, in September 2023, said I should apply for PIP because I was 16 and at that age you get swapped on to it from DLA.
This time my allowances went up to £290.60 a month. I was told the money was to be used to allow me to eat what I wanted when I wanted and not worry about the price of nice food. That’s not what I used it for though.
Mum did all the paperwork, I just spoke on the phone to someone explaining my symptoms and saying it was fine for the money to go into Mum’s bank account.
At first I was cross I couldn’t spend it right then, on things for me. But today I’m grateful she did squirrel it away because it was waiting for me when I wanted driving lessons and that first car.
At school I didn’t tell anyone about my mental health episodes or about the money I was entitled to after each diagnosis. My best friend knows but that’s it. Besides, one friend’s boyfriend also gets PIP for his diabetes.

I call my lovely car Fifi the fairy and the first thing I did was get a CarPlay system to sync with my iPhone so I can talk handsfree and listen to music. I drive every day. I love the independence.
I also used the PIP payments to buy a MacBook for college, but I really only watch Netflix and play games on it. And fuel my Vinted [shopping app] addiction. I’m at college now studying social care – I’m no slacker.
Because PIP isn’t means tested, I’ve got a Saturday job at Primark. I’m hoping to become a TikTok influencer, too, and have had more than half a million views.
I have looked at other financial support but there isn’t anything as good as PIP. I could get free bus and rail travel with a plus one (so a carer can come free). But I don’t need it as I’ve got a car!
My OCD and eating disorder were 100 per cent real to me at the time but, today, I’m pretty much free of both. What helped wasn’t the money – the strategies I was given to manage both conditions were what made the difference.
If I haven’t eaten in the day, for example, I make myself sit down to something nutritious. I have the dietitian I saw to thank for that.
The OCD is fully controlled, too. I know that being busy is the best tactic – it’s when I’ve got nothing on that I can feel anxious.
I was happy to be discharged from CAHMS in Spring last year, but I haven’t stopped claiming PIP. I’m sensible with it and use the £295.60 I receive today to pay for my car insurance each month. At £250 it’s a lot!
As for when the PIP will stop – who knows? I know I’ll get assessed at some point, but I haven’t had a letter telling me when. I think I’ve got at least a couple of years of this welcome extra cash.
Life has presented me with this money, so why not. You’d probably take it, too – wouldn’t you?
