However, when he fails to intervene in a violent confrontation in a city playground, his identity comes to a head. ITV’s synopsis of the series reads: “John moves his family to the rural idyll of Coldwater. On arrival, he is befriended by neighbour Tommy, a charming, confident pillar of the community. John is impressed by Tommy. “However, he is blissfully unaware that Tommy is harbouring horrifying secrets. When John’s long-repressed rage finally explodes with disastrous results, he finds himself unexpectedly indebted to his new friend. But how long will it take for him to figure out just how dangerous Tommy really is?”. In the first episode of the series, viewers see John (Andrew Lincoln) move his family to a quiet village called Coldwater after witnessing the horrifying attack in a playground near their home. The rural, quaint village poses an effective backdrop to the dark and twisted thriller. But viewers may be wondering where the new series was actually filmed. The series is set and filmed in Scotland, but the village of Coldwater is fictional. Coldwater’s director Lee Haven Jones, who hails from Wales, confirmed that in order to create the fictional village, the production used an array of locations in and around Glasgow, with a few sites in the Highlands as well, reports TimeOut . “Coldwater is a composite of many different locations surrounding Glasgow,” the director explained. “They key thing for me was to make the place as real as possible. “We have to understand why John and Fiona want to live in this rather lovely village. It was really important that this place felt aspirational, that it was beautiful. But at the same time, it felt very real.” Dunlop in Ayrshire, which is south of Glasgow, was used for shots of Coldwater. The show’s writer David Ireland described it as “an idealised version of rural Scotland”. He added: “You’ve got the beautiful church, beautiful coffee shops. Everybody is friendly, and a little bit strange.” Dunlop’s church – Dunlop Kirk, will be featured in the third episode of Coldwater, which will air on Sunday evening, September 21. Other locations include South Lanarkshire, where the exteriors of John and Fiona and Tommy and Rebecca’s houses were filmed. Edmonstone Hall, which is in Blanefield in Stirling, is used as a village hall in the third episode. John’s running scenes in the first episode were shot at Glasgow’s Pollock Country Park, which is the city’s largest park, while the house belonging to John’s therapist Williams, who is played by Jonathan Watson, was filmed on a hill overlooking Loch Lomond. And on the eastern edge of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park is where The Lade Inn in Callander is located. The inside of this Highland pub was used for interior shots, while its car park was used for exterior shots in the series. Viewers can watch the next episode of Coldwater on ITV and ITVX at 9pm on Sunday evening, September 21.
