The Indian Information Technology (IT) sector, which went on a hiring spree in the post-pandemic years, is now in a normalisation phase, according to Rahul Goyal, MD, ADP India and Southeast Asia – an HR and payroll solutions company.
Speaking to businessline, Goyal noted that companies grappling with high attrition may have been overstaffed beyond their needs. “Post-pandemic, we saw companies hiring between 20,000 and 50,000 people. They have now done away with that unusual amount of hiring and have become more cautious, focusing on essential skills and not expanding indiscriminately,” he added.
Goyal, however, clarifies that the moderation is not a sign of stagnation, and there is still a healthy amount of hiring happening across sectors. “While there might not be any huge upswings, a healthy amount of hiring will continue; however, employees will need to adapt and calibrate themselves,” he added.
A recent businessline report said thatthe top five Indian IT majors added 12,718 employees in FY25, following a net loss of over 70,000 the previous fiscal year.
Goyal mentions that large organisations now need employees to invest in skilling themselves. “While domain-specific technical skills will always be crucial, companies are increasingly focusing on employees with soft skills, including people management, communication and teamwork, among others. It is crucial that employees focus on self-learning and constantly upskill to insulate themselves,” he said.
ADP, a Nasdaq-listed HR and payroll solutions provider, has been operating in India since 1999. The company employs around 30,000 people and works with nearly 2,500 clients, processing payroll for close to one million employees in the country, Goyal added.
