Israel Strikes Doha in “Summit of Fire” Operation Targeting Hamas Leaders; Qatar Condemns Attack

“The IDF and ISA conducted a precise strike targeting the senior leadership of the Hamas terrorist organisation,” the Israeli military stated. According to Israel, these leaders were directly linked to the October 7, 2023, attack and have since been orchestrating operations against Israel from abroad.

Operation Aimed at Hamas’ Foreign LeadershipAn Israeli military official told AFP that the strikes specifically targeted top Hamas figures who have been directing the group’s political and military strategy from Qatar. “Most of Hamas’s leadership is abroad, and we will reach them as well,” IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir had vowed on August 31.

The announcement underscores Israel’s growing intent to extend its campaign against Hamas beyond Gaza, following nearly two years of conflict.

Qatar Condemns Strike, Calls it “Criminal Assault”The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong condemnation, calling the attack a “cowardly Israeli strike” and “a flagrant violation of international law.”

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said on X (formerly Twitter):

“The State of Qatar strongly condemns the cowardly Israeli attack that targeted residential buildings housing several members of the Political Bureau of Hamas in Doha. This is a blatant violation of all international norms and a serious threat to the safety of Qataris and residents.”

Qatar confirmed that its security forces, civil defense, and other authorities responded immediately to the incident to secure the area and ensure civilian safety. The government also stated that investigations are underway at the highest level and pledged to announce further details soon.

Impact on Ceasefire NegotiationsThe strike could complicate ongoing ceasefire negotiations and efforts to secure the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 attack. Qatar has long played the role of mediator between Israel and Hamas, hosting Hamas’ exiled political bureau and facilitating indirect talks.

Israel’s Justification and International ReactionIsrael’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich praised the military action, saying:

“Terrorists have no immunity and will never have immunity from Israel’s long arm anywhere in the world.”

The United States was reportedly briefed in advance of the operation, a White House official confirmed to AFP.
