GLP-1 drugs have transformed the lives of many Massachusetts residents who have long struggled to lose weight. But the pricey medications are about to get harder for some people to afford. Starting on Jan. 1, several of the state’s biggest health insurers, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Point32Health, will no longer cover GLP-1s when they are prescribed for weight loss. The insurers will, however, give large employers the option of paying extra to continue covering the weight-loss drugs for their workers.
