Is Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo dead? 'Wizards Beyond Waverly' S2 finale left cast 'crying'

Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed if you haven’t watched “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place” season 2 finale.
‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ season 2 had a shocking finale, but everything is not what it seems.
In a guest appearance on the “Wizards of Waverly Place” sequel, Selena Gomez’s beloved character, Alex Russo, returned and was forced to open a portal between the dark world and the real world by the evil Lord Morsus (Tobias Jelinek). Morsus held Billie and her brothers, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko), hostage, forcing Alex to sacrifice herself for her wizard family just moments after a big twist!
Alex is revealed to be the mom of Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) in the finale. The revelation was one that the actress said pulled some big emotions out of her while filming the scene with Gomez.
“When we read the finale, man, Scott Thomas got me, I was bawling,” Brown told our entertainment reporter Courtney Tezeno. “It was very emotionalIt’s a comedy. So, you know, I wasn’t really expecting us to go there.”
David Henrie, who plays Alex’s brother Justin Russo, told us the vibe of the set while filming the finale was emotional, saying, “Half the set was crying. Selena was crying. Everyone was crying.”
Fans had been speculating that Alex was Billie’s biological mom for some time after the trailer teased that Billie was dropped off at Justin Russo’s doorstep. When we caught up with Henrie ahead of the season two premiere, he told us fans were on the right track with their sneaky suspicions.
“Here’s what I’ll say, you’re asking the right questions. I think you’re asking the right questions,” he said. “So, know they will be explored this season in a very deep and profound way.”
Henrie, who portrays Billie’s adoptive father on the series, also praised his co-stars for putting on an award-worthy performance.
“To brag about her and Selena, they give incredible performances. They give Emmy-worthy performances. I’m not kidding, if we end up winning an Emmy, it’ll be because of them two, at the season finale, because they really tapped into some deeper emotions there,” he concluded.
The fate of Alex is still to be determined, but it seems promising. Henrie posted a message on X that read, “Just so you know, Alex Russo is tougher than you think – and there’s a lot more to come. You’re asking all the right questions. Stay tuned, #WizardsBeyond has got some magical surprises up our sleeves.”
