Is Ryan Walters Resigning As Oklahoma Superintendent? Reports Suggest Move to Freedom Foundation

Ryan Walters, the controversial Oklahoma schools superintendent known for his conservative agenda, is reportedly considering resigning. While his next steps remain unclear, speculation is mounting that Walters may be joining the Freedom Foundation, a conservative think tank. NOTUS reported an official announcement could come as soon as this week. Walters has yet to respond to requests for comment. Since taking office in 2023, Walters has pushed bold, often divisive policies, including efforts to place Bibles endorsed by President Donald Trump in classrooms, support for the state’s first publicly funded religious charter school (which was blocked by the Supreme Court), and advocacy for tax credits benefiting conservative online schools tied to PragerU. Recently, Walters teamed up with PragerU to create a test aimed at screening out “woke” educators relocating from blue states. He also announced a partnership with Turning Point USA to establish chapters in every Oklahoma high school. Aligning closely with the MAGA movement, Walters has utilized national media and social platforms to amplify his conservative positions, even sparking clashes with Trump critics, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom. However, his aggressive style has alienated key allies, including Governor Kevin Stitt. Walters’ presence in Oklahoma’s education scene has waned amid controversies, including allegations of inappropriate conduct during meetings and multiple absences from the state Board of Education. Though he has not formally resigned, Walters is reportedly planning a transition to the private sector. According to The Oklahoman, he may join the Freedom Foundation, a conservative free-market nonprofit based out of state. Walters had previously hinted at a possible 2026 gubernatorial run but has yet to make a definitive decision on his political future.
