Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are expected to cross paths at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, fuelling speculation about a possible meeting between the two leaders. However, PM Modi is unlikely to travel to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit, instead External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the gathering. PM Modi is unlikely to travel to Malaysia to participate in the meetings related to the ASEAN summit beginning Sunday due to scheduling issues, reported PTI, citing people familiar with the matter. Earlier, it was said that PM Modi will be visiting Cambodia along with Malaysia. However, as he is not travelling to Malaysia, the planned trip to Cambodia stands postponed, the people cited above said. There is no official word on India's level of participation at the deliberations related to the summit. However, it is learnt that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the meetings. India has already conveyed to Malaysia that Jaishankar will represent India at the ASEAN meetings, the report said, adding that PM Modi may participate in the India-ASEAN Summit through virtual mode. The 10 member countries of ASEAN are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. The ASEAN-India dialogue relations started with the establishment of a sectoral partnership in 1992. This graduated to full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and summit level partnership in 2002. The ties were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2012. Trump To Travel To Asia, Attend ASEAN Summit Malaysia has invited US President Donald Trump as well as leaders of several countries which are the dialogue partners of the ASEAN. Trump is set to travel to Kuala Lumpur on October 26 on a two-day trip. This will be Trump's first trip to Asia in his second term. Trump will be first visiting Malaysia. Malaysia and the US have ben working towards securing an expanded ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. According to an AP report, Thailand and Cambodia are likely to sign the agreement during the summit. From Malaysia, Trump will leave for Japan, where he is expected to meet the newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Th final stop of President Trump's trip is South Korea, which is hosting this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Trump has said he’ll sit down with Xi while he’s there.
