COMEDIAN Mark Mehigan has said himself and his RTE star wife feel “incredibly blessed” as they prepare for the birth of their first child.
The Dublin native’s wife Doireann Garrihy is currently in her third trimester and her due date is fast approaching.
Mark has opened up on how he feels about becoming a dad for the first time.
When asked if he’s nervous, he told The Irish Sun: “I’m really lucky. I feel really privileged that we have the opportunity and again I’m just taking it by the day.
“Myself and Doireann are incredibly blessed and I am not arrogant enough to think that I have any understanding of what’s coming down the line.
“My approach is just expecting the unexpected and myself and Doireann are going to do everything we can.”
The 33-year-old, who’s well-known for his hit podcast Mark Mehigan’s Weekly Roast, began his career as a stand-up comic and returned to the stage for the first time in two years this summer.
Mark is currently gearing up for his biggest show yet in Galway tonight.
The Irish star spoke about his flourishing job saying: “Life is great, it’s busy which as a comedian that’s always a really, really good complaint.
“But again I think because I’m a comedian you can never really stop and smell the flowers – you just have to keep going because it can be inconsistent. So at the moment it’s really, really good and it’s really busy.”
Mark explained how he’s going to balance his dad duties with work.
He said: “We’re taking everything one day at a time. Expectations and plans for me are the sort of enemy of happiness so I tend to take it one day at a time.
“The beauty of it is, in theory – in between changing nappies and doing everything else I can do to help our baby and Doireann, I will.
“I don’t think I can envision myself taking a huge amount of time off as such but but we will see.”
Many celebrities decide to keep their children’s faces off social media. Mark has revealed that himself and Doireann have yet to make any big decisions like this.
He said: “Myself and Doireann at the moment are taking things day-by-day. Today, the biggest discussion that we’re having is the wallpaper and whether or not Doireann will trust me to wallpaper the nursery.
“We’re not making any big decisions in advance. we’re not parents yet – we don’t know how it feels. We will take everything one day at a time.”
The social media star also revealed that they know the gender of their baby.
Mark spoke about the type of name they’re NOT thinking of saying: “I think with baby names, it’s a tricky one.
“In 2025 I’m sure a lot of people would expect us to go for for a really Irish name but at the end of the day, I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel like people have gotten very fast and loose with the aul fada and the interpretation of baby names.
“People are just calling them their kids stuff like Howard and then throwing in a few random fadas.
“We are wide open to suggestions and to names. I heard a really good bit of advice. somebody said to me the best way to approach naming a baby is two yeses one no. So unless the both of us are on board it’s a no.”
Mark, who has been sober for almost four years, has been quite open and honest about his struggles with addiction.
Speaking about mental health, he said: “I think it’s amazing to see men and women talk about their mental health and issues.
MENTAL HEALTH
“I did nothing special by talking about my sobriety. It’s just my experience. There’s loads of people on the complete spectrum of mental health opening up and the more people, whether they’re in the public eye or not – it’s irrelevant.
“It’s just something that we should all do and I do believe we are getting better. Mental health is becoming a more prominent conversation, regardless of what my individual experience is on a macro level.
“I think Ireland is really moving in the right direction when it comes to understanding and acceptance and openness when it comes to mental health struggles.”
When asked what gets Mark through the tough days, he said: “Everybody has tough days – whether you have addiction or not. Nobody is immune to the human condition.
“For me I believe things that keep us all grounded are having loving relationships in your life whether that’s with your family of origin or relationships or friendships and opening your mouth.”
Mark has partnered up with Oatly to launch the ‘I love Oatly in my coffee when I don’t know it’s Oatly’ hotline (1800-HIOATLY) – a playful ‘oatline’ for the newly oat-curious.
