Ireland AM's Eric Roberts felt 'useless' for the first few months of being a father

Eric Roberts has admitted he almost felt "useless" for the first few months of his son's life. The Ireland AM presenter praised his wife Niamh for how much work goes into being a mum as he said she did the heavy lifting for the first few months. On New Year’s Day this year the couple welcomed their first child Rían after tying the knot in 2023. “You feel useless in the first four or five months as a father almost,” the TikTok star said. “He [his son Rían] was breastfeeding, and she [his wife Niamh] was incredible the whole way throughout. And there’s only so much you can do, other than changing nappies or just trying to be supportive. But now that he’s getting older, I feel so much more involved.” However, he said that fatherhood has been an enjoyable challenge. "You’re just trying to stay on top of everything, and you’re constantly absorbing information," he told the Irish Independent. "And you don’t know what to listen to, what’s right and what’s wrong, whether it be online or from family or from friends. So I suppose you just have to learn as you go. And that’s what my dad said to me when I was talking to him about it before Rían came along. You just adapt. You learn every day, and every child is different. We are having fun doing that. I just can’t wait for him to keep getting older so I can throw him off the walls and have the craic with him.” The family recently moved from Eric's native Donegal to Dublin, due to his work as a presenter on Ireland AM. Having taken over Síomha Ní Ruairc's hosting duties on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Eric said he is loving that every show is different. "I’ve had my hair cut by a motorcyclist," he said. "I’ve gone to drag spin class, and then I could be talking about Trump and Zelensky and the presidential debate. It’s so up and down in there, and that’s what keeps you on your toes, and that’s what makes it exciting.” The last year has been a rollercoaster for Eric, who paved his way through being content creator on TIkTok. “This time last year, I had no child, I was living in Donegal, and I wasn’t a presenter. My whole life has flipped on its head this year,” he said.
