iPhone Fold and iPhone 18 Pro set to get faster mobile data

Sure, the iPhone 17 lineup hasn’t even shipped yet, but that doesn’t stop the news cycle rolling on. A new report details the chipset we can expect to find inside the iPhone Fold and the iPhone 18 Pro models.
This will of course include the A20 chip, the first to be made using a 2-nanometer process, but the report suggests we can expect mobile data speeds to be faster thanks to a new Apple modem chip …
A20 chip for iPhone Fold and iPhone 18
The iPhone 17 models use TSMC’s 3nm process, but the company is widely expected to adopt 2nm chips next year.
It wasn’t initially clear whether this would be exclusive to the high-end models, but a report back in March suggested that all of next year’s iPhones would get the smaller process chip. Apple is expected to lead the way with the most advanced smartphone processor chip designs, with a recent attempt to steal details of the technology.
Taiwan’s Commercial Times echoes this and suggests that the MacBook Pro and Vision Pro will be next in line for the 2nm tech.
Next year, the iPhone 18 will adopt the A20 chip, which is made by TSMC’s latest 2-nanometer process, and with WMCM advanced packaging. The supply chain reveals that the M6 chip used in the [MacBook Pro] and the R2 chip of Vision Pro are also expected to follow
C2 modem for faster mobile data
A recent report revealed that Apple’s C1 chip is slower than the Qualcomm one used in most iPhones to date, and there had been concerns that this might mean slower mobile data for the iPhone Air.
Apple addressed this with the introduction of a C1X variant, which the company said was “up to” twice the speed of the C1.
However, both chips lacked support for mmWave 5G, and the Commercial Times reports that next year’s iPhones will use a C2 version which is expected to include support for the fastest mobile data standard. It’s likely that Apple will seek to outperform the latest Qualcomm chips.
The report specifically says that the “high-end models” will get this chip, so it may be exclusive to the iPhone Fold and the iPhone 18 Pro models.
The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to get in-display Face ID, removing the Dynamic Island and replacing it with a small punch-hole camera slot. The iPhone Fold, in contrast, is expected to have Touch ID on the side button.
