TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Professor Anuraga Jayanegara from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at IPB University has been named as one of the five recipients of the 2025 Habibie Prize. This award is given to individuals who are deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the development of science and technology. Anuraga was selected as the recipient in the field of engineering science.The 42-year-old man admitted he did not expect to be named the recipient of the prestigious award, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Indonesia." "I myself did not know the process. Suddenly, I was contacted and informed that I was chosen for the Habibie Prize. At first, I thought it was a hoax," said Anuraga during the award ceremony on Monday, November 10, 2025.The 2025 Habibie Prize is a collaboration between the Habibie Center and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) with funding support from the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). The selection and assessment process involves various national and international institutions, including researchers from abroad."I also do not know what the indicators are, but maybe it's because my research has been continuous since my master's degree until now. Maybe that's what is acknowledged," said Anuraga, who is also the Director of Strategic Studies and Academic Reputation at IPB University.Anuraga explained that his research has focused on feed science and technology, particularly in engineering livestock feed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This topic has been his focus since his studies in Germany and Switzerland, and he has been developing it for more than 15 years."We engineer animal feed to ensure that the livestock remain productive while producing lower methane emissions," he said, adding, "So the contribution is not only for the livestock sector but also for climate change mitigation."In his research, Anuraga extensively used natural plant compounds, such as polyphenols and tannins, components of tea that are known for their health benefits. "The active compound in tea is tannin. We utilize this active compound in livestock feed to suppress methane emissions," he said.According to him, IPB University has provided extraordinary support through a conducive research ecosystem.
