Intrinsic motivation best, sales tax unfair, stop 'anarchy' | Letters

Intrinsic motivation best I enjoy a good contradiction. We all know the idiom of the carrot and the stick. The concept is traced back to ancient times. The story is about motivation. The phrase alludes to the method of tempting a donkey to move forward by dangling a carrot before it and prodding it with a stick if it refuses. Some would call this strategy reward and punishment, an incentive system or simply motivation. It’s a basic idea to use positive and negative reinforcement to encourage certain behaviors. The contradiction here is that the best motivation is intrinsic self-motivation. As a member of the Charleston County School District 20 Constituent School Board for 14 years, I can affirm that discipline was our main agenda item. Expulsion was the stick for bad behavior. I also worked at the Medical University of South Carolina for 28 years, where my job included testing physical human performance. The laboratory gave objective test scores for speed and strength. The carrot was a job offer or a return to sports. Student motivation and engagement are a game of intrinsic motivation. The ultimate motivation comes from within, where the mind, body and heart align during learning. The real magic in education is guiding students to activate their own agency to empower themselves to be the best versions of their potential. Charleston County School Superintendent Anita Huggins knows that students are the heart of our work, and she believes in everyone’s ability to be their best selves. Students learn to believe in themselves and to take a leading role in the learning process. F.X. CLASBY Can't stomach more I’ve been buying and selling classic cars since I was 14, and I pride myself on being able to sell just about anything. But even I couldn’t persuade Charleston County taxpayers to approve a transportation sales tax right after receiving staggering increases in property tax bills.
