CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) – The Chippewa Area History Center and the Chippewa Falls Museum of Industry and Technology will jointly hold an event to celebrate what would have been Seymour Cray’s 100th birthday.
Cray was a native of Chippewa Falls and is known as the Father of the Supercomputer.

Chippewa Falls Museums to Celebrate Seymour Cray’s 100th Birthday on September 28th
The Chippewa Area History Center and Chippewa Falls Museum of Industry and Technology announced today their plans to jointly celebrate what would have been Seymour Cray’s 100th birthday on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
The open house at both museums will take place from noon until 4pm. Snacks, refreshments, and games will be available. Tours and exhibits will be available at both locations. The organizations have been collaborating with The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, UK. A roundtable Q&A discussion will take place in the Diamond Classroom at the Chippewa Area History Center at 3pm.
Visitors are invited to visit both institutions to learn about the life and impact of Seymour Cray. No admission will be charged, but donations are encouraged.
Seymour Cray Jr. was born in Chippewa Falls in 1925. He is often credited with being the father of supercomputing since developing one of the first high performance/supercomputers the CDC6600. From these early days with Control Data Corporation(CDC), through his time with Cray Research and Cray Computer Corp he was a pioneer in the industry, with ideas and innovations far ahead of their time. Cray died in 1996. Cray Research is now a subsidiary of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which maintains a branch in Chippewa Falls.
