Inside Zohran Mamdani's woke, celebrity filled victory party after socialist won NYC mayoral election

Zohran Mamdani's supporters partied with celebrities and influencers as they reveled in the socialist's success at becoming the next mayor of New York City. The mayor-elect's victory party in downtown Brooklyn on Tuesday night saw raucous crowds erupt as Mamdani, 34, cruised to victory. Supporters, many wearing tradition dress representing their cultures, first gathered at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre. They then moved on to the Someday Bar, a gay bar selling $16 cocktails, where Mamdani merchandise-clad voters celebrated into the night. Celebrities including SNL stars Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman, Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon, singers Lorde and Maggie Rogers and Ella Emhoff, the step-daughter of former Vice President Kamala Harris, were spotted in attendance. Actor Kal Penn shared smiling selfies with Mamdani and comedians Hasan Minhaj and Aasif Mandvi to Instagram, captioning his pictures: 'That's my mayor!' Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also showed her support at the party and embraced controversial influencer Hasan Piker. Piker raised eyebrows with his remarks at the victory bash, declaring that Mamdani's win as a socialist was a turning point for America, a nation that he said 'defeated the Soviet Union, unfortunately.' When Mamdani eventually took the stage shortly before midnight, he declared himself to be 'a new era of leadership'. Mamdani told his supporters that his victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo showed that 'the next generation of New Yorkers refused to accept that the promise of a better future was a relic of the past'. 'You showed that when politics speaks to you without condescension, we can usher in a new era of leadership. We can fight for you because we are you,' he continued. 'For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands. 'And yet over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater. Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands.' Supporters could be seen hugging and cheering throughout the night, celebrating the election of New York City's first Muslim mayor and its youngest since 1892. Mamdani's victory speech also saw him take several swipes at his political opponents, including directing his remarks directly at the White House. 'Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!' he said. 'If any city can show a nation how to stop Donald Trump, it is the city that gave rise to him,' said Mamdani, who represents a district in the same borough of Queens where the President was raised. 'So, if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one.' Mamdani's winning address was quickly slammed by CNN's Van Jones, who described the aggressive rhetoric as a 'missed opportunity' to offer a message of hope to the nation. Van Jones said Mamdani's speech was a far cry from the message that won him the leadership contest, saying the rhetoric 'will cost him going forward.' 'I think he missed an opportunity. I think the Mamdani that we saw in the campaign trail, who was a lot more calm, who was a lot warmer, who was a lot more embracing, was not present in that speech,' he said. 'And I think that Mamdani is the one you need to hear from tonight. There are a lot of people trying to figure out, can I get on this train with him or not? Is he going to include me? Is he going to be more of a class warrior even in office? 'I think he missed a chance tonight to open up and bring more people into the tent. I think his tone was sharp. I think he was using the microphone in a way that he was almost yelling. 'And that's not the Mamdani that we've seen on TikTok and the great interviews and stuff like that.' 'I felt like it was a little bit of a character switch here, where the warm, open, embracing guy that's close to working people was not on stage tonight,' the panelist said. 'And there were some other voice on stage. That said, he's very young. And he just pulled off something very, very difficult. 'And I wouldn't write him off, but I think he missed an opportunity to open himself up tonight. And I think that that will probably cost him going forward
