November 12, 2025 - 9:50AM Share via Email Share on Facebook Share on Whatsapp Copied URL to clipboard Sneak peek at season 2 of Palm Royale After the finale cliffhanger, season 2 returns with Maxine (Kristen Wiig) endeavoring to find her footing in the cutthroat world of Palm... In a colourful, glorious show with plenty of unhinged moments, it’s one of the Palm Royale standouts: Kristen Wiig, as wannabe socialite Maxine, hijacking toasts during a boat party to deliver an almost two-minute speech … in whale. For some context, Maxine, desperate to cement her status in the exclusive Palm Beach high society in the late 1960s, has a beached whale turn up which threatens to ruin her all-important big gala. She winds up believing it’s her karmic retribution for an earlier misdeed, and does her best to set it right – including bellowing whale calls into a microphone while at a yacht party to persuade the enormous mammal to head back to sea. It’s utterly absurd, and hilarious – and as Wiig told news.com.au, took a long time to get right. Confirming it was not just “ad libbing”, as most viewers would assume, the 52-year-old actress had a tape which she learned by heart. “I honestly practised, I had the tape and was like, ‘I want this to be my voice’,” Wiig explained. “I rehearsed, much to the chagrin of my family.” She added: “It was a big part in our show! [The whale] was an important character.” Copied URL to clipboard Truly insane detail behind hilarious Kristen Wiig scene The Palm Royale star has shared the staggering truth... The whale scene was just one of the highlights of season one of Apple TV+’s comedy series, released in March 2024, and fans are about to get a whole new season of hijinks with season 2 landing this week. Palm Royale, also starring Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Carol Burnett, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson and Kaia Gerber, has been nominated for 11 Emmy Awards. In its debut season, viewers followed the journey of former beauty queen and underdog Maxine as she desperately tried to find her footing in the cutthroat Palm Beach community by getting into the elite Palm Royale club, using the wealth of her comatose aunt, Norma (played by Burnett). Wiig returns as Maxine, the underdog desperate to make it in the exclusive Palm Beach community. Picture: AppleTV+ Allison Janney in a sneak peek from season two. Picture: AppleTV The season finale ended on a cliffhanger, and the 10-episode season two sees Maxine left as a social pariah after a scandalous public breakdown, and forced to use her cunning to claw her way back into the inner circle. All the while, dark secrets threaten to be exposed and rivalries, old and new, intensify. Wiig not only plays the lead, but serves as executive producer – which she admitted to news.com.au provided some unique challenges. “The biggest thing for me was having to watch cuts when we’re editing, and I have a hard tie watching myself,” she said. “Sometimes I’ll do things that I don’t even watch … So I really have to not see myself, and just see it as the show, and that’s kind of a challenge.” The fact that the scenes have already been filmed and are therefore locked by the time Wiig sees them in the editing suite helps. “It’s over, we’ve already shot it. I can’t watch dailies or scenes or anything while we’re shooting, I don’t want to see a single frame because I’ll be too aware of what I’m doing. But when it’s already done, it does feel a bit more like you’re in the edit process … I can’t go back and do anything differently anyway.” Ricky Martin is another big name among the all-star ensemble cast. Picture: AppleTV+ While no stranger to scripted films and TV stars, the former Saturday Night Live star has previously admitted in interviews that her heart will always be in sketch comedy. For Wiig, Palm Royale is the perfect “bridge” between “a TV show and SNL”. “Because it’s kind of not really based in reality in a way, and we do get to be bigger characters, depending on the scene, because there is so much absurdity and ridiculousness,” she said. “It kind of feels like the perfect transition for me because it’s so crazy.” More Coverage ‘Sprinting for my life’: Star’s Cruise mishap Julia Roberts’ unexpected offer to co-stars And with an already-established cast most producers could only ever dream of, who would be next on Wiig’s last to add to their ensemble? “Bradley Cooper, because he is Carol Burnett’s crush,” she laughed. “I’ve got to do that for her.” The first episode of Palm Royale season 2 premieres today on AppleTV+ and will be followed by a new episode each week until mid-January.
