PHILADELPHIA — A little more than three hours before first pitch in an empty Citizens Bank Park, Trea Turner was back in the batter’s box Tuesday afternoon.
The Phillies shortstop could be back for real this weekend.
Turner, who has been out since Sept. 7 with a right hamstring strain, took live batting practice against a pair of minor league pitchers at Citizens Bank Park.
“We’re hoping,” manager Rob Thomson said when asked if Turner could be activated to play this weekend in the final games of the regular season. “I’d like to see him get some at-bats for sure. But he had simulated some at-bats today and his timing was OK. Getting him on his feet (this weekend) would be good for sure.”
The Phillies are expected to earn a first-round bye and begin play in the National League Division Series on Oct. 4.
With a .305/.356/.458 slash line, Turner was in the midst of his best since signing with the Phillies before the 2023 season.
Turner will also face live pitching Wednesday. Thomson estimated that Turner is running at 70 or 75% of his full speed. Thomson said he watched Turner run Monday.
“He ran really well,” the manager said. “I was really encouraged by it to tell the the truth.”
In other injury news, first baseman Bryce Harper was not in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins because he is sick, according to Thomson.
“He’s not feeling well,” Thomson said. “I don’t know if he’ll be available tonight.”
Thomson also said the Phillies expect to activate utility man Edmundo Sosa (groin injury) from the injured list Wednesday.
