TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia ranks 55th out of 139 countries in the Global Innovation Index 2025 (GII 2025) released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), dropping one spot from last year’s standing.The country’s highest ranking over the past six years was in 2024. In 2022, Indonesia was ranked 75 before climbing to 61st in 2023.”The GII 2025 maps the contours of innovation across the world, showing us that the fastest-advancing economies in the GII are those that view innovation as a fundamental engine of resilience, growth and competitiveness,” said WIPO Director General Daren Tang in a press release on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.GII 2025 measures country rankings based on 7 main components. In terms of innovation input, the components measured are institutions; human capital and research; infrastructure; market sophistication; and business sophistication. Meanwhile, in terms of innovation output, there are two measured pillars: knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.In Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania, Indonesia ranks 12th out of 17 countries. In the upper-middle income category, Indonesia ranks 8th out of 36 countries.Compared to neighboring ASEAN countries, Indonesia’s position is lower, with Vietnam at 44 and the Philippines at 50. Globally, Switzerland holds the top position.In terms of innovation input, Indonesia ranks 60, while in terms of innovation output, it ranks 59th. WIPO wrote that Indonesia had better performance in innovation output compared to innovation input in 2025.In the institutional component, Indonesia ranks 39th with a score of 61.63. Furthermore, Indonesia ranks 92nd (score 24.44) in human capital and research; 71st in infrastructure (score 41.57); 50th in market sophistication (score 40.63); and 83rd in business sophistication (score 26.52).
