Indonesia's Minister Keeps Silent on Layoff Numbers During Prabowo's First Year

TEMPO.CO,Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, declined to comment on recent layoffs following the release of his ministry’s performance report marking one year under the Prabowo-Gibran administration, from October 2024 to October 2025.“We are currently monitoring the situation,” Yassierli said briefly when asked about the issue in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.During a press briefing titled Reflection on One Year of Aspirations in the Manpower Sector at the Manpower Ministry, Yassierli instead urged reporters to highlight the government’s positive accomplishments.“Only the good ones,” he told the media.According to data from the first half of 2025, the number of layoffs reached 42,385 workers, an increase of 32.18 percent year-on-year. Approximately 60 percent of these job losses occurred in Central Java, West Java, and Banten. In July 2025, Yassierli attributed the layoffs to declining market demand and changes in industrial business models.“Some industries have experienced reduced demand, while others are adjusting their business structures. There are also issues related to internal labor relations,” he said, as quoted by Antara on July 22, 2025.Earlier, the Supervisory Board of the Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) projected that up to 280,000 workers could be affected by layoffs this year. As of April 2025, the number of recorded layoff victims stood at 24,360 people.“The estimated number of layoff victims for 2025 is around 280,000,” said BPJS Manpower Supervisory Board Chair Muhammad Zuhri during a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Commission IX at the Parliament Complex in Senayan on May 20, 2025.Zuhri said the board had asked BPJS Ketenagakerjaan management to provide assistance to affected workers and expand access to job-loss benefits. The board also urged BPJS to strengthen its presence by adding more regional and branch offices, enhancing digital services, and offering alternative channels for laid-off workers to file Job Loss Guarantee claims.Editor’s Choice: Young Politicians Around PrabowoClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
